ok. i'm here with 3 maniacs and need info:

1. Putt-putt Fun center (Timberlake): yea or nay?

[ages of the boys are 3, 11 and 12 if that helps, price not necessarily an object.]

2. recommend a good place to eat that has chicken nuggets and or mac/cheese and dont mind a 3 yr old running wild between the booths. should also serve alcohol or at least turn a blind eye toward mild child abuse

3. anybody do the natural park zoo? what do you think?

4. ditto the VA safari park?

5. ditto Amazement Square downtown?

thx

oh- another thing:

is the new Tower Theater open for the public to take a look-see? I'd love to see it while I'm down.

in a more general sense... is anything going on this week on campus (where I can ditch 3 kids)

1. weak, but not a lot of other options, and it's cheap.
2. Big Lick (one on Timberlake and one off of 29 Business), they are "kids eat free" on Mondays.
3&4. They're pretty good, and kids love it.
5. It's a little pricey, and they do charge for adults, but fun for kids. One of the rooms is under construction right now (they occasionally change stuff around). Not sure if 11 & 12 year olds will be as entertained as the younger kids are. Actually, they probably won't.

thx ALUMNUS.

Once I buy tickets they'll like it or get beaten. I've gotta look up that Big Lick.

While I've got you... does Snowflex have summer hrs? Not so much for the ski/snowboarding, but these guys would love to see the animal collection in the lodge.

Not sure what the Snowflex hours are, but it's pretty much open during most of the day.

And don't expect anything gourmet at Big Lick, but they do have pretty good fries. And my kids may be there tonight (without me). If you go there and see three of the most incredibly cute kids you've ever seen, they would be mine.

SNOWFLEX: Yes, they're open throughout the summer. This website will give you details: http://www.liberty.edu/snowflex/

TOWER THEATER: It's kept locked, but a quick call to the Theater Office might get you access: https://www.liberty.edu/index.cfm?PID=12657

SUPREME COURTROOM: If you haven't seen the Supreme Courtroom in the Law School, it's worth taking a look. It's usually unlocked. Just check with the receptionist at the entrance to the Law School to let her know you'd like to see it.

1. Putt Putt also has batting cages and go carts for the older kids.
2. Ranch BBQ on Lakeside has mac & cheese, but you've got to feed them BBQ, not nuggets; better yet, Bonjangles on Timberlake has mac & cheese (I think) and chicken strips.
3. Wouldn't recommend the Natural Bridge Zoo, but the one in Roanoke is nice for a smaller zoo.
4. The Virginia Safari Park is the best thing in the area for kids. It's been hugely expanded, includes a petting zoo (with kangeroos), and spend a few bucks to buy buckets of food for the kids to feed the animals--be careful, the lamas are mean.
5. No idea, but there is a skate park nearby and also bike rentals nearby for the Blackwater Creek Trail (there's also an LU skate park at Cander's Station next to the Drowsey Poet).

Amazement Square used to have Lego Rock Band set up in the basement, so that's something the older two should enjoy even if they think the rest is kinda lame. My 9 year old loved it, though.

Has VMI finally been able to get the Stonewall Jackson museum up & running? I was disappointed last fall to miss out on it.

Medic - If you have a zoo membership up in Philly then you might get a reciprocal entrance into the Safari Park (or at least a discount). We stop at zoos when we stop across the country generally for free off our Houston membership.

If you want to burn some time together, my kids loved the hike up to the Peaks of Otter combined stops at the apple orchards nearby. Everybody loves apple and we all know what Jim thinks of cider.
