I am a senior residential student that has been blessed to attend Liberty for the past three years, and I believe that its focus of scholarship and spiritual growth has effectively prepared me to be a successful in my chosen field. As a soon to be alumnus, I am beginning to reflect on my college experience here, and I am grateful for all that Liberty has provided me. As a way of giving back I want to use my experience as a residential student to make a vital recommendation that would be a great improvement to student life and increase fellowship opportunities.

As an undergraduate student I was very fortunate to be heavily involved in the University’s Quiz bowl team, and as a participant I was able to travel to many different schools and experience their campus life and environment, the most remarkable being the campus of East Carolina University. Now don’t get me wrong, East Carolina wasn’t the most remarkable because of its beauty. The Quiz bowl team has traveled to the University of Virginia, the University of Tennessee, Coastal Carolina, and Virginia Commonwealth University, all schools known for their pristine campus and innovative integration into their cities. The remarkable thing about East Carolina University was that it possessed an affordable bowling alley for students on campus.

Bowling fills a need for many students and faculty that is currently not being met by the present facilities. Not all students enjoy the fierce and rigorous competitive atmosphere of basketball, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, or snowflex, and many care not to go swimming. The fact is some of our bodies cannot handle the wear and tear that the average competitive sport demands, and the vast majority of faculty and staff are unwilling or physically incapable of participating in these sports or activities available at Liberty. The chance of seeing a faculty member gliding down the slopes at snowflex is about the same as seeing Dr. Towns dunk a basketball at LaHaye, it might happen but it’s not likely. Having a bowling alley at Liberty would provide an environment that faculty, staff, and students equally enjoy and can interact together informally outside the classroom.

Now you might be saying that there are bowling alleys in Lynchburg, and that there is not a niche that Liberty can take advantage of, that the bowling need for Liberty students and faculty is being met. The truth is that it is not. The alleys around Lynchburg charge exorbitant rates for shoe rental and games, are seedy and foul, smell rank with cigarette smoke, and are inhabited by some unsavory characters that University officials would probably prefer students avoid. I have asked a number of faculty and students, that state that if there was an alley at Liberty they would be eager and willing to bowl there and frequently.

Liberty University has the opportunity to provide for this need, and create a uniquely Christian experience that faculty, staff, and students could enjoy together. A member of the Quiz bowl team that attended Pensacola Christian College stated that PCC already had a bowling alley for its students. Liberty has a motto that if it is Christian it should be better, and my opinion is if it’s Liberty it should be the best, and I have continuously seen this in action since I have attended and we cannot let a school such as PCC outdo us on this issue.

I have been brainstorming and I believe that these are the good benefits that would result if Liberty were to provide the student body with a bowling alley.
• The bowling lanes would provide an informal setting where students could socialize and compete against faculty, staff and alumni of the University in a fun environment for Christian fellowship.
• The bowling alley would provide an additional dating environment that keeps students on campus. This would deter students from seeking dating opportunities off campus where it is much easier to fall into immoral actions.
• The Bowling Alley would also provide an overflow for the C-lab and the Tilley. It is a place where students can be loud and boisterous while generating revenue for the school, by actively participating in games and buying concessions. The fact is that the C lab from 9:00 pm till closing is very loud, and many students go there just so they can be out of their dorm not to study, and the Tilley is usually very crowded. The bowling Alley provides a suitable alternative for the active student, who doesn’t want to study, and won’t bother those who wish to study.
• Because of the expensive rates outside of campus if the University charged dollar games and dollar shoe rentals, the students and faculty will come, and attend regularly, paying for the construction cost and eventually generating revenue for the school.
• The bowling alley could be utilized for fundraising opportunities, such as for the Special Olympics, Godparent home, and other suitable organizations, and bowling is not dependent on the weather, so it could be used in this function as often as needed. Those who have experienced Lynchburg’s Schizophrenic weather patterns can really appreciate this.
• Also bowling can be utilized for intramural sports, and for class. If a bowling league were offered I’m sure it would be one of the most popular activities on campus.
This bowling alley can be uniquely Christian, and uniquely Liberty, and offer a valuable opportunity to unify the campus in competition, and the best thing is that it is surely able to pay for itself within a couple of years with guaranteed student participation.

just a thought

Yes, RS is one of my own. He just finished his Honors thesis in history, and he really needs a place to bowl as he begins the Liberty M.A. in history program as a gsa next fall. I've never been to PCC, but when my students entered the student center at ECU for the regional tournament, RS wasn't the only LU Quiz Bowler eyeing their basement bowling alley with envy.

Haha, I've actually proposed this idea before...plan and all. The amount of space needed is tremendous though...space that just isnt readily available on campus (or at least that currently has a roof). I did try to work out some floor plans for the Tower Theater which has a floor at the top that is unused. Well, at least the original blueprint for the Tower has a floor...not sure if that's the case for the end product or not honestly. I'll have to look at the numbers again but I think the lanes needed for the amount of people on campus (and to be profitable if done by an investor) was close to 40-50 lanes.

There are not many options for a BWW type atmosphere mixed with a CityView type atmosphere....which in the bowling business world is Lucky Strike ( http://www.bowlluckystrike.com/ ). I have no doubt this would do well, big screens at the end of each lane with sports games..honestly it's a Tilley Center type atmosphere. They even have a DJ booth...however, alcohol sales does make up for .35 cents or so on the dollar which obviously wont be happening. The avg profit per lane nationally is pretty impressive though and really did surprise me when I saw it.

Through the process I learned It would also be important though for it to be designed well enough for regional tournaments to be held at as well as college club tournaments.

All of these numbers I'm pulling off of memory from years ago from case studies....if only we had someone on this board with the actuals....hmmmmm :)

If I had money, I'd invest in something like this.

Now that I spend time working in a bowling center, I see the potential that a place with food, TV's, pool, arcade games, and bowling could have at a place like LU. It's a perfect place to hang out, and there's money to be made.

Could they put a bowling alley next door where LU bought that ourdoor mall, near TRBC at some time?

Y'know, I actually thought there WAS a bowling alley on campus. Never saw it, but I guess I figured they built one when they built the new Student Center stuff.

But I wouldn't go doing things just because PCC did it first -- otherwise we might end up with a cafeteria with a carnival theme. And a $3 million chandelier.

That said, a bowling alley would be a good idea. I might even bowl.

Didn't anyone tell you? The top floor can't support any weight.
