GEtting back to the actual topic of discussion...as talented as Im sure this guy is, Id like to wait til he matches up with competition this fall. If he is as good as advertised then this could be a legit pass defense, something that will be very much needed. Watching us get torched by CCU I really wondered what could have happened if we had someone who could cover the seam and lay some massive hits that would make receivers and tight ends think twice before running that route

If reports that he is giving Summers fits in practice are true, I doubt there is another receiver he will face this year he can't cover. This should help our secondary considerably, but as far as the CCU game is concerned, it was the tight ends who were roaming free over the middle, which is usually not the cornerback's responsibility. Our whole secondary needs to tighten up.

The problem with our pass defense was not our lack of skill with our DB's. It was the defensive scheming that was the problem. We went with a cover-2 vs. Coastal and that killed us. Opened up the middle like crazy for them. One player isn't going to help THAT much if the schemes are still off. Love the fact that we got him though, don't get me wrong.

I dunno Bob Sanders (when healthy) made a HECK of a difference in Indy's Cover 2

if you have a lock-down corner you can change the scheme. I don't think we've had a lock-down corner the past 4-5 years, some talented corners but not a guy who you can put on a island one on one and shut the other teams best receiver down consistently. The scheme might looks better with a secondary that doesn't bit on every pump fake. i agree tho, i didn't like the defensive calling most of the year.

My point was that we had the skill to protect against a lesser opponent. The level of ability in our players was not the problem. 45 points is a scheme problem, not a player/position problem.
Let me also restate that I'm stoked to have Walt on the team.

It's a win/win. Matching up against Aikens in practice can only benefit Summers. Likewise, Summers probably isn't going to go up against a lot of guys with the cover skills of Aikens.

If we can play Aikens in a lot of 1-on-1 situation, we can shade a little bit to the middle of the field where we've really struggled.

From a coach.."Walter Aikens is the best cb Ive every had..Chris Summers is a stud and cant do anything with Walt..something I have not seen a cb do since Summers has been here"
I gotta place my bests that this kid if he stays healthy will be all Big South at least..you lock down one of the top prospects at wr in FCS then your a little better than average lol

Josh Norman of CCU has been the best CB in the conference for 2 years and supposedly is getting a lot of looks from the NFL. Summers beat him like a drum.

No he didn't. Norman was all over Summers for most of the game.

7 catches for 127 and an 80 yard TD, plus he had him beat deep early in the game and Norman interfered. Yeah, Norman was all over him.................. except those 8 times.

or you could say he was 6 for 47. Not saying you discredit the 80 yarder, just saying that was only 1 play. Not sure how you would factor in the PI penalty.
Just saying taking out the one pass it makes it look less impressive.
There are lies, dang lies, then Statistics

If you say 6 for 47, you ARE discrediting the 80 yarder, and at the very least, I'd say the interference penalty is the same as a 15 yard completion, although it would probably have been about a 70 yard TD if he hadn't interfered. I was at the game, and Chris beat him really badly deep twice. One touchdown and one interference penalty. Add 6 more catches, and I'd say that's a pretty good day. I think any honest cornerback who got beat deep by the same WR twice in a game would say that the guy got the best of him, even if he didn't catch another ball. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, that's pretty much what Norman said.

And Norman won the battle on every single fade route thrown to Chris that game. Go back and read the game thread. We were all saying that Norman was making a huge impact on that game.

I didn't mean for this to get so off topic when I made the Josh Norman comparison. Norman is an FCS All-American and a pro prospect, and yes, we couldn't complete a fade to Summers against him. Come to think of it though, who DID we complete a fade against from about game 4 on?
