I decided to start a new thread because it was totally off topic and really not fair to have some of the stuff we were discussing on the Cara Coy thread.

I think we are being a bit harsh on Emily Frazier, and may be underestimating her. (I expect a hearty AMEN! from Sly on this.) Yes, she had a minus assist/turnover ratio, but it was in fact the best on the team at 85/93. She was by far our best 3 point shooter at .417, which is good at any level. She was a FRESHMAN. Emily wasn't supposed to have to start 30 games and play the majority of minutes at the point this year. Since the rule of thumb is that players make their greatest improvement between their freshman and sophomore years, we may be better off at PG than we think right now.

I also agree with you. Emily got off to a nice start and then struggled, but she was given a tremendous amount of responsibility as a FRESHMAN. She will continue to work and learn and grow into her role during the offseason, and will start next year in a much better frame of mind than perhaps she ended this one. I look for her to be a very strong and improved contributor for us (and I'm not even from Texas!).

Great piece Chris. I want to make another observation, while TOs were a problem for the most part, we also shot the ball poorly. Last year our FG % was 48% this year it was 41%, same can be said about FT % and 3 PT %. Our rebounding was the only consistent part of this years team. In regard to Emily Frazier, I would hope her confidence level rises and she becomes the "general" on the court next year - that seemed to be missing whether it was Emily or Dymond - I never got the sense either one of them were floor generals like Mays or Fasnacht. I do believe Emily will be an improved player with a year's experience. Next year's team can really be dominant in the BSC and begin to win some high profile non conference games which was lacking this year.

{quote="Chippy"] Emily seemed to be in over her head this year, missing open shots, layups forcing passes, etc. I[/quote]

Chippy, I usually have to agree with you but I must take you to task here :D

Sure, sometimes she definately appeared to be at times, but McLeod was always a pretty stable PG (until this year). Also, her missing open shots, layups, and forcing passes... name me one person on the team who didn't do that? They all did.

It wasn't just a problem with one or two players. It was a problem with all the players.

With a healthy Devon & Avery alone, we should be vastly improved. Barring injuries, we are setting up for what could be a special run next season.

As for Emily, I wear my HCYA love on my sleeve. I think she did exceptionally well under the circumstances. Did she have concentration issues as a freshman? Of course. But at times she showed the type of ability to be a real leader when she is called into that role. The step up from high school to college is often even more pronounced on the girls side than the boys. And for a point guard, it is even more pronounced. I expect much bigger things from her in 2011-2012 as she matures and makes better adjustments to the college game.

Frankly I like hearing Coach Green's comments in the Chris' story. That's the mindset we need to foster not only in womens hoops but football and other sports as well. Past accomplishments should be set aside and all focus should be placed on improving TODAY.

There no doubt that he didn't consider this season a rousing success. I sensed a lot of disappointment in his voice and in the voice of the players. They're an angry group heading into the offseason.

Thanks for your comments. I don't disagree with any of them. I guess I'm coming across as anti-Emily and I'm certainly not. She was our best option this year at that position and will grow into it over the next three years. My main point is to point out how we have 4 solid starters, 3 of them with a lot of talent and the 4th right behind them. I'm merely suggesting if we had that 5th quality starter at PG how much of a force we could be - I suggest a top 25 team. That's all I'm saying. I hope you caught my point in an earlier thread re: shooting woes as well - that and the TOs IS a team issue and not a one position issue. :)

You guys also have to remember that Emily didn't play her senior season in high school. This year was her first year back coming off of a knee injury.

Players make their biggest improvement from freshman to sophomore year.

Players coming off of a knee injury are always better the second year than the first.

Combine these two and Emily should be pretty good next year.

If players show their greatest improvement between FR and SOPH year then what about the Sophomore Slump? In my experience the biggest improvement is between the Jr and Sr year.
One thing we need is athleticism in the back court and/or wing. I understand the offensive philosophy and it is not always conducive to more athletic players, but on the defensive end we just get killed by the athleticsm of other teams. Of course, it is nice that when our wings get beaten they have to run into Avery et al!!!! Having someone who could be a shut down defender would be a great thing.

We actually have 2 athletic wings in Danika Dale and Jasmine Gardner who have the potential to be defensive stoppers. The problem is, their offensive skills are so poor they often hurt us when they are in there. They combined to shoot just over 30% and had 24 assists and 76 turnovers this year. Gardner's assist/turnover was a pitiful 3/31. Danika is a real athlete. If she can improve her offensive game even a little, I think she can play a bigger role in her senior year.

You can only have a "sophomore slump" if you have a good freshman year Haize. 8) Most freshmen WBB players have nowhere to go but up. Devon was an exception, but her problems this year were mostly injury related.

The thing with Jasmine is that Coach Green would sometimes pull a Sandman Sims with her. she would get on the court, she would struggle and she is off the court before you can say, "who is that?"

How can you claim to be OLD and not know the Sandman?!?!?

If they were that good defensively, you would find a way to get them on the floor. I know who they are and have seen them play and practice and you have valid points about their offense. You also could say the same about their defense.
And you can have a mediocre Fresh. year and a worse Soph year

We lost I think three seniors (and maybe Carra Coy) so we have a good core returning in addition to all the girls coming in this summer and fall

We continue the trend of bringing the big girls in the middle in!!
My worthless .02 is that athleticism on the wing and point and chemistry will be the key to this years team. While EVERYONE says Chemistry is important, it becomes more so when there is a turn over problem. In that case, improved chemistry leads to an improved TO/A ratio. Plus a high basketball IQ at the point helps. So we have 1 of those, now need the other two!

Are any of the new girls on campus yet? When do they begin the informal part of conditioning and individual ball skills. I would be more confident if I knew all of last years returning players are indeed returning. While they may not be the boys team I wonder if there is any disenchantment with any of the current players and or fringe players that would be displaced by the incoming girls. I also wonder who if any will be redshirted.

Yes, would like to see a little more speed and athleticism on the wings and a confident, tenacious point guard.

About a week ago our AD posted a pic on Twitter of I think it was four freshmen girls hoopsters walking down a hall. Unfortunately I can't find the pic to share. But I believe most all of our freshmen athletes in all sports are on campus starting this week unless they have significant reason otherwise (i.e. Gielo).

Whoa there killer, this isnt a vending machine for information! If I cross reference to the roster, officially three players are not returning: Kittery Maine (even though she has one more year of eligibility), Rachel McLeod and Dymond Morgan. Avery Warley graduated this past May but she also has one more year of eligibility and Im sure wouldnt want to go out like we did. Kylee Beecher will be a senior this year, Devon, Brittany and Tolu will be R-Juniors, Emily and Jasmine will be sophomores and Lakendra will be a Junior. We dont have confirmation on Carra Coy (although with the number of bigs in this year's class it would not surprise me if she wasnt back on the roster next year) and Terika if she is back will be an R-sophomore.
