LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Braves minor league manager Luis Salazar regained consciousness and was breathing on his own Thursday afternoon, after being hit by a line-drive foul ball during Atlanta’s Grapefruit League game against St. Louis.

Salazar, 54, was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Braves catcher Brian McCann while standing in the dugout in the first inning of a game at Champion Stadium. He was unconscious for more than 15 minutes, and some players and others in the dugout feared he was dead.

McCann was so shaken by the incident that he left the game before the second inning.

I have not heard about this...wow. Is it the fact that more of these "hit by a batted ball" are being reported more now or the fact that it's happening more now. It seems like a mix of both but I really believe this is happening at a much greater rate the last 5 years.

The difference (besides the obvious) is that the ball from Fumble Jr hit him in the throat.

Salazar seems to be recovering. From Braves writer Dave O'Brien:

ESPN's reporting that Salazar just had a surgery to remove his left eye. Definitely keep this man in your prayers..

I was shocked this morning when I heard that, and hopefully theres no complications. I heard he wants to return to work real soon so thats good.

I saw Louis at the DMV in Lynchburg a few days ago, I guess getting his VA license and/or car registered. He seemed to be in great spirits, and other than the patch on his eye showed no ill effects.

He's been an absolute trooper, doing interview after interview. He gave me 40 minutes last week when I was hoping to get 10. He's happy to be alive and in uniform. Now if he can get his baseball team turned around ...
