CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty University sophomore forward Megan Frazee (Xenia, Ohio) has been voted the Big South Conference Preseason Women’s Basketball Player of the Year by the League’s Head Coaches, Sports Information Directors and media panel, it was announced today at the Conference’s 2006-07 Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon at the Renaissance Suites Hotel in Charlotte.
Frazee was averaging 18.5 points and 9.8 rebounds before suffering a season-ending knee injury in game 14 last year. She was twice named Big South Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week during the season, was MVP of the North Carolina State Tournament, recorded a Big South-best nine double-doubles in her 14 appearances, posted five-straight 20-point games (longest in the Big South in 2005-06) and connected on 52.8 percent (19-36) of her three-point attempts. The 6-3 sophomore appeared in two League games, averaging 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 59.1 percent from the floor (13-22). Overall, she posted a 47.3 field goal percentage (89-188) and shot 72.9 percent from the line (62-85). Frazee, who grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds at No. 7 North Carolina in just her second college game, was a Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) All-State second-team selection after the season. She received 13 first-place votes and finished with 93 points in the voting to earn a spot on the preseason All-Conference team.

Cook, who received four first-place votes and 72 points in the voting, earned All-Tournament honors last year after averaging 16.7 points in three postseason contests. She was High Point’s second-leading scorer with 12.4 points per game, and upped her averages in Big South play to 12.8 points. Cook also was 31-78 from three-point range (39.7) and shot 38.9 percent (42-108) from the floor in League play last season.
Fann was last season’s Freshman of the Year and earned second-team All-Big South honors in helping Winthrop to an 11.5 game improvement over 2004-05. A five-time Freshman of the Week selection, she averaged 12.5 points in 29 games to finish fifth in the League. Fann also ranked high in rebounding (7.2 – 4th), field goal percentage (42.0 – 6th), steals (1.9 – 6th) and tied for fifth in three-point percentage (36.2). She averaged 12.8 points and 7.3 rebounds in Big South games as well.
Stephens, a first-team All-Conference selection a year ago, ranked fifth in the League in scoring (12.4), fourth in field goal percentage (45.0), seventh in rebounding (6.7) and 11th in free throw percentage (72.6). She also recorded 18 blocked shots (13th in the League) and 16 double-figure scoring games, including six 20-point nights. Four of her 20-point efforts game in Conference play, while her 7.6 rebounding average against League foes was fourth-highest last season.
Fasnacht earned First-team All-Conference honors as a sophomore last year and was MVP of the Advance Auto Parts Women’s Basketball Championship. She sealed Liberty’s 10th consecutive Conference tournament title with a 13-foot jumper with 14.9 seconds remaining in the championship game against High Point. Overall, she started 25 of Liberty’s 31 games, led the squad in assists with 85 and ranked second in the Big South in free throw percentage (80.9).

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty University’s women’s basketball squad has been chosen first in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll, as voted by the League’s Head Coaches, Sports Information Directors, and media panel. The announcement was made today at the Renaissance Suites hotel in Charlotte as part of the 2006-07 Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon.
The Lady Flames, which have won a Conference-record 10-straight tournament titles as well as nine consecutive regular-season crowns, was voted to finish first in the women’s poll for the 10th year-in-a-row. Liberty, which returns all five starters from last season, garnered 21 first-place votes and finished with 202 points. High Point, last year’s regular-season and tournament runner-up, captured second-place in the voting with four first-place votes and 178 points. Winthrop, which posted an 11.5 game improvement over 2004-05 – second-best in the NCAA last season, finished third with 136 points. Coastal Carolina was fourth in the voting with 117 points, just ahead of fifth-place Radford (one first-place vote, 115 points). UNC Asheville was sixth in the voting (100), followed by Birmingham-Southern and Charleston Southern tying for the seventh spot with 44 points each. VMI does not field a women’s team.
The women’s season starts Thursday, Nov. 9 with High Point in the Preseason WNIT at North Carolina State and concludes with the Advance Auto Parts Big South Basketball Championship March 8-10, at the Justice Center on the campus of UNC Asheville. SportSouth will televise the women’s championship game live on Saturday, March 10 at 2:00pm.
