I've bitten the apple and have gotten a Macbook Pro. I'm not completely sold on the operating system but the hardware blows always anything I've seen or used (and yes some of that should be credited to the OS). I will say that Windows ran better on my MBP then it ever has on any of my other computers.

Any tips or tricks out there for Macs? Any "must have's?"

I already have the Adobe Suite, Adium, iWorks, Office Mac and installed Bootcamp to Windows 7. Anything else? Schorchy has been very helpful teaching me the basics.

I must say there are some aspects of the Mac that are brilliant....there are also a few things that make me shake my head some but there is undoubtably brilliance in this machine.

It would be a shame to have a Macbook Pro and not have at least the stripped down Final Cut Express. Frankly video & graphic design are the only really compelling reasons that I con conjure for spending the additional jack to justify the Mac pricetag. I almost bought a 15" MBP a few months ago before house repairs cleared out my kitty. But some FSN work this spring has me back in the market. I keep hearing they are going to give the 13" a nice upgrade in a couple of months. I am considering going that route for portability combined with a nice monitor at home for serious editing.

If you do go for the fullscale Final Cut Suite, I highly recommend Adobe AfterEffects (AE). But I can let Protoype extol those virtues.

Oh yes, I went back and forth b/t the 13 and 15...at the end of the day it just wasnt a big enough difference for the advantages of the 13 over the 15. I dont think it's all that much more portable and weighs about the same.....but you'll be getting the i5 and not a lesser processer

That is what I am planning right now.

And for the record, the more I work with our firm's high tech clients the more I am buying into the tablet hype. Upcoming developments will make them much more practical for everyday use.

I got the 17" because it's my work computer - and I do a lot of editing. Probably overkill but absolutely worth it.

It's actually not bad to lug around. The hardest part was finding something to carry it in.

Still waiting for someone to put out a good windows tablet, or a tablet that will allow me to dual boot with windows with virtual box or something like that. I've got every day programs (both personal and for work) I use that have no alternative and will work only on Windows. Also want one that will allow me to use a keyboard (preferably USB, have zero use for a wireless keyboard), using an on-screen keyboard all the time is awful.

Windows is dying a slow death. But there will be a number of Windows 7 tablets coming out this year.

As for keyboards, your search is rather limited. New technology is coming shortly that will solve your current dilemma.

Oxymoron.

But seriously. There won't be a good Windows tablet until Microsoft legitimately gets on board with what makes tablets worth having. So far they're showing no signs of doing that. Windows tablets aren't going to get any better than they currently are in the foreseeable future.

Windows made huge strides with their new mobile platform but still have a ways to go. You'll see a duel boot tablet soon....cell phones are close...tablets couldnt be far behind.

I'm surprised by your assessment of tablets, El Scorcho. Considering the fact that nearly the entire industry is now consumed with tablet development with NUI and massive display upgrades are both coming out in 2011, it would appear to me that no devices will show more significant upgrades in the short-term. What am I missing?

I was thinking his only thing he was saying was that Windows makes an awful OS for tablets.

Yeah, I think if you read that again you'll see I was just assessing the state of Windows-based tablets and Microsoft's approach to tablets thus far. Google and Apple seem to be doing just fine in the tablet markets and seem to get what makes that market tick. Microsoft does not seem to get it. Even with their new phone OS, all indications are that they want to stick with traditional Windows tablets. Meh.

I agree 100%. When I look at Microsoft, all i can think is they are in an IMB-esque plummet from dominance to near irrelevance.

For the record, I am very bullish on where tablets are headed. The current state of affairs (i.e. iPad, Playbook & Xoom) are just teasing us with where the tools can take us.

This is the future though, one device for everything. No matter what you dock it to (car, laptop, desktop) you'll have the same setup and files and everything at your fingertips. http://www.technewsdaily.com/ces-2011-m ... ptop-1944/

Add this with cloud technology and you're well on your way.

Come on, HMO. If you're going to talk about the Atrix Dock, go to the #1 gadget source...
