Money builds a regular season champ every time in NY. It takes special skill to build a WS champ. The Yankees have been missing certain ingredients almost every year since 2001. At times their lineup has been down, and other times it has been the poor defense and pitching. I don't really know how to explain the Yankees putrid offense against the Tigers. Either the Tigers have the best pitching in baseball (and will win it all) or the Yankees failed to show up. I tend to think the Tigers pitchers are a lot better than we thought (even Rogers). The Yankees pitching certainly was the downfall in this series. Moose, is not a great pitcher and Johnson is only average. They only had one great starter in Wang, and I think the prognosticators including myself should have probably seen this coming. The tigers were obviously saving up for the playoffs during the last part of the season, while the Yankees opponents over the last month were a lot of minor leaguers and pitchers with subpar records. The Yankees will need to find more clutch hitters and much better pitching to reclaim their dynasty. Right now they are nothing more than the Atlanta Braves of the Nineties. Someone will pay for this debacle and my guess is that it will be Torre. Whether by firing or retirment the Yankees should replace him. I'm a Torre apologist but something needs to be done to rock the boat a bit. They need to put much more of this money into finding quality starting pitching and relievers.

As for new coaches I've heard a disturbing rumor that Lou Pinella is a possibility. That would be crazy. Pinella couldn't beat the yankees with a team that won a 116 games. He's been to NY several times and never won. The choice is clear in my mind--Joe Girardi.

Yeah, it appears the Astros are going to make a serious run at A-Rod. The 'Stros have pitching to deal and a desperate need of a big stick to pair with Berkman.

I predict A-Rod to my beloved Cubs. They Cubs will give them two or three players (probably pitchers) that aren't that great now or are plagued by injuries (Prior and or Woods) who will then become the bedrock of the starting Yankee rotation for the next decade. Meanwhile in the friendly confines, A-Rod continues his assualt on the record books as an all time great and fan favorite. And when the Cubs reach the post season one or two times in that Decade, he will choke and the curse of Bartman will be blamed

I have not read or heard ONE report about the Astros, where the heck are you getting that info? I haven't seen one national publication even mention them at all, but i have seen others mentioned. The Angels have the best and most pitching to give up and need some power behind Vlad. My prediction is the Angels.

Angels and Astros do have excellent pitchers. If the Yankees can get a couple of those guys that would be great. I would like to see Pettite back in Ny. Had he stayed he would have probably won 20 this year.

I'm not joking. Great player? Yes. The Most Valuable Player in baseball? No way. I get tired of all of the Jeter gushing from ESPN. If he played for the Royals no one would think he was superstar calibre. But the fact that he's in the NY spotlight he gets WAY too much credit for everything. But I digress ...

And rocketfan, there is buzz around Houston that the Astros are one of the handful of teams that will be in the mix for A-Rod. But Pettitte wouldn't be involved in any deal. He's like Clemens ... he wants to stay home or call it quits.

For the record, I hate the yankees. But there is no way Jeter is over-rated. No, he isn't the best talent on the field, whether it be hitting, fielding, etc. However, he is always the smartest, toughest player out there and does everything very well, if not great. He's also clutch, and never makes stupid mistakes. I'll take Jeter over any player in the Majors if I was starting a team. He is the quintessential baseball player.

Jeter is a great player....but I do believe he is over rated at this point in his career....he is one of the greatest players to play the game, but at this moment in his career he is not as great as ESPN seems to think he is....

so i guess i agree with Sly, not sure if this is what he was saying or not...but yes thats my thoughts
