If you want to talk ASUN smack or ramble ad nauseum about your favorite pro or major college teams, this is the place to let it rip.

I really wish we'd sing victory in jesus after every winning basketball game. we tried to do it when I was a student but only 10-15 of us actually did it. Jacksonville State's Band sings I'll fly away after every game. this is also a cool tradition.

I had a bunch of friends go to Taylor and play soccer and other sports there. It is funny to see another Christian school with a similar theological bent getting some attention ... even as a curiosity.

I really like this idea. The words of the chorus are powerful to all followers of Christ. It would be an interesting tradition.

FFG, what part did you sing? Chorus only OR Chorus First Verse and Chorus?

Lyrics to Victory in Jesus

I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't
To me the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

Very, very early in our athletic history that song was indeed sung and even played by the band after a win. The reason it did not become a tradition is that Dean/Coach Eddie Dobson, who was at the time the spiritual leader of the university was vehemently opposed to it. His soccer team was singing it after a win, and he shouted them down saying "victory in Jesus took place 2000 years ago on a cross and in an empty tomb, not on a soccer pitch!!" He mentioned the incident during a sermon in chapel, and made it clear he did not want the song sung as a celebration of athletic victories.

We did get an Amazing Grace going one time after a football game though.

I think this promotion would have to have an * saying depending on officials b/c honestly I'm not sure I'd make it with a few of them we've had over the years. 10 points or not. I do think it's a cool tradition...but it's pretty hard to just "start a tradition" it's kind of like saying you want to start a "historical location" it has to happen over time.

These guys have simply been studying Bill Veck and his son that's all.....this is straight out of a minor league promotional playbook :D
