Cerritos linebacker David Lopez is a defensive force on the football field leading the Falcons in tackles (81), solo tackles (33), tackles for loss (nine), sacks (4.5) and fumble recoveries (two). It's difficult to imagine the football field as a sanctuary. Football is a physical, violent game played by strong, fast, athletic young men who routinely hurl their bodies into one another at top speed.

But a sanctuary is exactly what the game has become for Cerritos College sophomore David Lopez, who is going through a difficult time in his East Los Angeles home. Lopez's father, Jesus, is a diabetic who recently suffered a heart attack and is struggling to recover.

For David, the hours he spends each week practicing with his teammates - and especially game days - have become a blessed escape from the realities that await him at home.

looks like he has a real nose for the football...and he certainly looks like someone who would make a very good extra blitzer out of a 4-3 type look. He also looks like a very physical player (judging by some of the hits).

Sly Fox wrote:Very true, bozlady. But Cerritos isn't exactly the 'hood. I stayed there on business a few years ago and it is pretty sweet.
But if he grew up in the streets of East L.A. ..'nuff said.

I must be missing something but where in my original post did I say what you quote me as saying PA...if you go back and reread it (and actually use the reading comprehension skills I know you have...) I never said that...

We didn't don't fly in guys from L.A. unless we mean business. But typically we have seen the offers presented on the trip by these JUCO guys if the staff likes what they see of him in person.

Generally, but definitely not always, the impact players are scholarship players. Most of the research done for players is through the recruiting websites and done with searches that link players to Liberty. Otherwise, it takes someone with personal information to get the conversation started. If you've got info, post it.

Lopez prepped at Garfield High School in Los Angeles and was a non-qualifier. When he went to find the right JUCO program, he said Cerritos just felt like the best situation for him and he couldn't be happier with his decision.

"It's a good program and I really liked the coaches a lot," Lopez told JCFootball.com. "I really enjoyed my time here and I feel like the experience has prepared me for the next step."

As a two-year starter for the Falcons, Lopez manned the middle of the Falcons' defense, totaling over 50 tackles, two sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries as a freshman in 2009 and followed that up with a team-leading 107 stops this past season with 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 4.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

With that productivity and to go along with his ideal size and 4.7 speed, Lopez has three offers to his name and is seeing attention from three Pac 12 schools as well.

"I have offers from Liberty, Portland State and San Jose State right now," Lopez said. "I visited Liberty back in December and I was at Portland State on January 21st. I was supposed to visit San Jose State this past weekend, but something came up and I couldn't make it so I am probably going to try and reschedule that, but we'll see.

"I will probably sign late because I'd like to visit them and then Oregon, Oregon State and USC are all starting to show me some interest and I want to give them a chance to look at me too."

While he is an ideal fit at middle linebacker due to his physicality, Lopez said he is more than willing to move outside if need be.

"I don't care where I play really, just whatever helps me get on the field faster," Lopez said. "I like playing the middle because I've been doing it all my life, but I can play outside too, so however I can help my team, that's what I will do."

Lopez already has his AA degree and will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
