I'm speaking as a guy who's Message board name is after his favorite role by his favorite actor. I spit on the guy whose idea it was to do a remake of True Grit. Look I actually like Jeff Bridges, but come on you can't remake a John Wayne Classic. Rooster Cogburn is one of the greatest all time characters. Bridges looks and sounds aweful in the previews. And Matt Damon, really?

There is no way the original classic of True Grit will ever be outdone by a wannabe come lately version.
One of the Duke's greatest movies.

I saw who directed this and who is in it, and I can almost guarantee it's going to blow away the original. Boo old people and their old movies.

Have you seen the original? Do you know John Wayn got an Oscar for his role? Who are the Coen Brothers? What have they done?

This is a bit like if Tom Hanks tried to play Jimmy Stewart's role in it's a wonderful life = fail.

Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, Fargo and No Country For Old Men were all fantastic films. Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy and O Brother Where Art Thou were very good but not great. Burn After Reading was kind of disappointing considering it's potential. Intolerable Cruelty was a departure for them - kind of a chick flick that wasn't exactly terrible. I haven't seen The Man Who Wasn't There, The Ladykillers or A Serious Man.

I know that True Grit is considered to be a classic and, while I haven't seen it, I can't deny the fact that it is loved and respected. I encourage you to check it out. The Coen Brothers are held in very high regard by most film buffs and they rarely disappoint.

For the record, the Coen Brothers aren't considering this a remake of the original film but a more faithful adaptation of the original novel than the original film was.

I'm a fan of raising arizona. But the more you list their films the more convinced I am that this Is a bad idea. All of these films are quirky. Also you said they are going to stay more close to the novel. I read it at one point and the liberties the original takes made it a better film. Sometimes more like the book is a bad thing.

2 more things. I'm just over 40 and not old just a John Wayne buff. I still don't think we can have a good discussion on this until you younger guys see the original. See The Quiet Man, McLintock, and Angel and the Bad man while your at it.

That's a good one. That's why I'm passing my love for John Wayne on to my kids. Otherwise they may not even hear of him at all.

The Quiet Man is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. Funny story line.
