So, I have been a long time visitor to this 'fanpage' for quite a while. I have never posted, namely because not much interesting happens here, but the last thread (G-W Postmortem) made me log in. I am a student at Liberty, have been since 2003. Well, I was a student in 2003-04 and just again in 2010. That gap in between though I was head of the Heroes Indoor Football Fan Club and later was Head of Football Operations as well as Fan Relations Manager for the team. I was also involved with the Marshall University fan club as well. I tell you this just to let you know, that I know a decent bit when it comes to fans at games.

In 2003, the Flames were 6-6, thanks to four straight wins to end the season. But the student section still packed out their side Image as seen in the picture. For as long as I can remember, the students have ALWAYS been at standing room capacity for the first half at games. The view across the field though, has always been sparse. The students have shown up in droves for every single home game. Do they stay? More than you think! A good number leave after the half, especially when winning 30-7, but a good amount stay as well. The sea of red is concentrated on the lower part of the stands and expand up at midfield. In fact, at the end of games it is still too crowded to watch the game sitting if in this "redzone." So to say that too many students are leaving, is false. And before anyone asks if I have seen the student section from across the way, I have. In fact I have seen the student section from the Chancellor's Suite high above. Admittedly, it does not look the best at the game's end. But trust me, more students are jammed in that space than probably the larger side!

Speaking of the larger, "new" side, let's talk about the local fans. I sat on the 30 yard line front row for the entire fourth quarter for the Charleston Southern game. There wasn't a person 15 feet away from me in either direction. At Marshall University, those are some prime seats that would never be left empty! The newly renovated side of the stadium is amazing, the large number of chairbacks are a choice for any football fan. And the second deck provides an outstanding view! There is not a bad seat on the second deck. The chairbacks there are better than any stadium I have ever been too. You know what's great about the chairbacks though? They are red or blue. So when they are empty, it isn't so obvious on TV as it fits in with the fan's attire. My point for this ranting? The local side has no where near the numbers of the student sides.

But that isn't the issue is it? The number for the last game was 16,000+. With nearly 2,000 CFAW students attending that brings the attendance down to 14,000 if it were for the extra guests. That ins't too hot, even though it was cold outside. The issue is how do we get more people to the games to begin with. First, Liberty has been playing good football for a few years now, and could easily compete with FBS schools. Moving up could help this, especially brining in bigger schools to Lynchburg to play. The University is working hard towards that goal.

Another improvement is participation. The students do an amazing job at cheering and chanting before and during the game. The locals, well the local's children do a great job as well! As for the LU chant, it can use some work. First it doesn't need to speed up, but stay constant. But it could be done at different parts of teh game when the team needs that "12th" man. At Marshall the "We Are... Marshall!" chant has roused our players for years!

But my question is where are the tailgates? Yes, there are tailgaters, but it is a sad excuse for tailgating. Back at Marshall the lot opens at 6AM gameday for tailgating. And nearly everyone tailgates! The local radio stations have HUGE tailgate areas with games for children, music for everyone no matter their taste and provide freebies. The town is painted green for the day as every business is behind the Herd. Here in Lynchburg, Tailgates are being setup just a couple hours before the game and people do not even seem to know there is a game!

I do wish everyone would stay longer, and hopefully that can happen. In Arena football it is easy to get people to stay. The action on the field never stops, and every break is filled with entertainment and stimulating on field contests. Hopefully someone can get that into the gameday operations office and they can do some work on that. Instead of complaining about people leaving early, what are your suggestions to get people to stay?

My suggestion for getting college students to stay....:

IT'S LYNCHBURG VA AND THERE'S A D1 COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME ON CAMPUS FOR "FREE!!" There's nothing else to do except play Halo or Modern Warfare and really those can wait...I'm sure it discourages the team when everyone leaves. I get louder and louder as fans leave because I feel the need to make up for them leaving. I like to be there for the team in any way I can. Coach Rocco is an amazing coach, we have a lot of talent on the team, they're always getting better and you never know when there's going to be an exciting play or a big hit. There's no reason to leave the football game. I still say our fan base sucks. Yes they pack out the student side for the 1st half. And the half time show this last game actually kept almost everyone in their seats which was great. But as soon as it was over they took off. Being a military vet I sat in the new blue seats on the upper deck and yes it was GREAT :) To me leaving a game early because we are winning by a large margin is NO excuse to leave early. And I'm still impressed and still bragging about whose ever kids those were in the upper deck with me and my wifes family...Everyone can learn a lesson from them 8) They were awesome! :D I know none of this was a way to keep LU's students at games...it's more of a why in the world WOULDN'T you stay...I WILL agree with the statement moving up to FBS would help with this. Bringing in bigger/more popular schools would bring in more fans and I think would help create more REAL Liberty fans. I would like to hear more of Chad's ideas though. Stick around give us more input. If you really have some ideas then maybe you can help out. Good ol' Jerry Jr stops in every once in a while and I'm sure a ton of people in the athletics department do too so maybe one of your ideas will spark another idea and lead to a great idea. Get all that? GO FLAMES!!!! PS: Completely off topic....But what looks better on a resume if you want a job in the athletics department at LU years down the road...A job at Dicks Sporting good's or ticket sales at LU?

First of all, don't compare our crowds now to the crowds of 03. There's no comparison. Have you seen our top 10 all-time attendance list? All of them, all of them, since 2006. Read that again.

We call the "new side" the Baptist side. And yes we know there are areas that are empty, and the side is not very loud. We've talked about that on here for years. It's getting better and will continue to get better. The thing that we're concerned with on the student side is the amount of students leaving doesn't seem to be getting any better.

We probably had 7500 students there yesterday, but look at pictures/video of the 4th quarter, MAYBE 1,000. Heck, we might have had 1500 there with 10 minutes left in the 3rd. It was like a mass exodus after the halftime show.

I'm glad we're complaining about crowds of 16k+ and the "few" tailgaters we have. Times have certainly changed. Remember this whole culture we're trying to build is only 4 years in the making. Marshall and all these other schools have 100 years of tradition.

I guess 50 years from now we'll be complaining with the 50k crowds.

agree with everything manson said. LU is a unique school and the students really do not seem to care much. i know their is a core group of students that are true fans and have school pride and the same goes for the "baptist" side. the hardcore fans are here at flamefans and we want it all to happen so fast, but what has happened since rocco came is amazing and it will continue to get better. as i said before Jr. is upset about the mass exodus of students at halftime. i would do the following to try and keep fannies in the seats:

1. if their is a 3:30 game, hockey should not start till 9:30pm. this is nothing against hockey because i go to the games, but that is 3500 to 4000 fans. if its a 7pm game, then hockey starts at 11am.

2. if their are intramurals on saturday, no intramural games from 2 hours before the game and none after the game til 2 hrs after the game

3. no concerts on gamedays if it is a 7pm game

4. no plays at the tower theatre on game nights, or if an afternoon game no afternoon matinees.

the only exceptions on this would be homecoming weekend for hockey and the drama dept.

make the football game "the " thing to do. the only place to go! i was told the food issue was taken care of by keeping the cafeteria open later, but with all the options now on and off campus, is this a real issue? have a season long contest with the dorms on attendance devising some type of system that they need to stay for the entire game and the winning dorm wins something. have brother/sister dorm tailgate parties on a consistent basis to promote unity and school pride. have a bonfire each friday night before games and get everybody pumped up and have giveaways. just a few thoughts. things will improve each year, but its gonna take some big things to change the student side from leaving early.

Id modify this to have the games at 12 noon for 7 o clock games and 9 PM for 3:30 games

2. if their are intramurals on saturday, no intramural games from 2 hours before the game and none after the game til 2 hrs after the game

To my knowledge there are no intramural events on saturdays (unless there is a tournament going on)

3. no concerts on gamedays if it is a 7pm game

This would be a fair idea more for the fall CFAWs since there is usually a concert that is part of the weekend...and push their start time to 8 PM

4. no plays at the tower theatre on game nights, or if an afternoon game no afternoon matinees.

With as good as the theater usually draws that one might actually be the hardest to institute if they went with it

the only exceptions on this would be homecoming weekend for hockey and the drama dept.

I've said it before but two things will solve our problems our attendanace problems:

1) Winning!!! Attendance has continued to improve each year Rocco has been here this shouldn't be overlooked as long as the winning continues I don't see any reason for it not to continue to improve.

2) Growing up with LU being the school. No one was been able to grow up cheering for LU as a winning D-1 program. Somebody mentioned that in 50 years it will be 50k I honestly don't think it will take that long. A typical generation is considered 20 years with the number of grads LU is putting out currently (both on campus and online) I don't see it taking any longer than a generation for LU to build a passionate fan comparable to what you see at many state schools (that have been around for well over 100+ years).

Looking forward to taking the next step of number 1 by making the playoffs this year!!!

Also this morning on the "Morning Line" (105.9) they even mentioned how it was sad that the LU student side cleared out so early (they did say they got the info from Lang's twitter feed). But they couldn't understand why they would all leave. They mentioned that they have problems with this up at UVA because the students will leave at half to tailgate and aren't allowed back in. Obviously this isn't the problem at LU so they couldn't understand why the students would leave.

Issue #1 -- community support. Problem: A LOT of the city of Lynchburg doesn't like Liberty. You cannot compare us to Marshall at all -- the people of Huntington bleed Marshall green, and have for a long time. There are a LOT of people in Lynchburg who wouldn't care if LU packed up and left town -- of course, they'd notice it within two or three years when all the restaurants closed down, but that's another topic. The locals won't show up until LU becomes Lynchburg's school, and that's going to take a lot of time..

Issue #2 -- student support. To the casual fans, it will make a difference when we're playing FBS football, and winning. For many, it will make a difference when we're beating Madison and William and Mary on a regular basis. There's no respect for our conference opponents at all -- Stony Brook could be an exception, but nobody has heard of them. A change of conference would help, but I don't think we'll notice a huge difference until we're playing FBS ball.

It's just going to take time. We're impatient because we're already there, but it will take time for everyone else to catch up with us.

Issue #3 -- this thread. REALLY classy on the part of the OP to throw out an insult to all of us right at the beginning of his post. Sorry you had to sign up to tell us all off, hope you don't waste much more time around here unless you're going to be constructive.

Certainly disagree that nothing interseting happens on here. In fact, most of the news and stories get broken on here long before Chris or the SID's can verify and publish (and rightfully so because they must be accurate when they post.

The fact of the matter is that it has improved greatly over the last 7 years but man you can't have what happened Saturday happen. It's ridiculous that 20% of the fans total and 10% of the student side doesn't stay. Our team blows out conference opposition and we leave, thats just stupid.

As far as the Baptist side not being loud. The student sections are the noismakers at every school and every football game. The baptist side, or (big donor side) in larger schools just dont do that. It will always be like that. Certainly there are a couple thousand that do not fit that bill that sit on their hands.

As I've said before, win these last 2 games and make a run in the playoffs and a few things will change I believe. i think that we will shed the "newby" status if we do that, more locals will realize taht the program is for real and begin to come out, the polls will respect us more (this is hapenning this year), and hopefully we can get some more series with I-AA powers to draw in folks. I think we have gotten stuck in a bit of a holding pattern the last couple years and getting that playoff gorilla off the back of the program would help a lot.

What I found funny is they announced the dining hall would be open until 8, with about 9 minutes left in the third quarter. If they would've announced it earlier, I think it library have kept half the students there past halftime.

No they definitely announced it before the game also. I'm thinking they maybe need to get even more creative say dining hall doesn't open till after the game (please remeber that you can use your meal point at the game)

oh Chad..I have a pretty good idea of who you are and you are a huge LU fan...but come on man...our freshmen year and the year following it was nothing compared to the kind of support the team gets from students today...you are dead wrong

And chad I am pretty sure this site would be the opposite of boring to you..stick around man, this site is right up your alley...

but stop comparing this to Marshall or anything else..this is LU..very unique school with a very unique student body.
