Only Three Undefeated Teams Remain in FCS Football

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Eight weeks into the college football season, only three teams remain perfect in championship subdivision football. Appalachian State and Jacksonville State, two of the three undefeated teams, are atop the FCS Coaches Poll this week, while the last team with an unblemished record, Bethune-Cookman, moved up three spots to No. 16 this week.

Appalachian State remained at No. 1 this week after picking up a conference road win against Western Carolina, 37-14. The Mountaineers received 26 first-place votes and 674 total points overall. Coming in right behind Appalachian State was Jacksonville State after a 56-3 win over Austin Peay to improve to 8-0 on the year. The Gamecocks moved up one spot from the previous week.

Stephen F. Austin, who received the final first-place vote and 612 total points, comes in at No. 3 this week.

William & Mary improved one spot to No. 4 after handing then-No. 2 Delaware its first loss of the season, 17-16. The Tribe overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to start out the season 6-1 for the second straight year. The Blue Hens had a chance to win the game with under one minute remaining, but a 42-yard field goal attempt by Mike Perry sailed right, allowing the Tribe to extend their home-winning streak to 10 games. It marked the second time this season that William & Mary was able to defeat the second ranked team in the nation, as they defeated then-No. 2 Villanova 31-24, on Oct. 2.

Villanova is the final team in this week’s top five.

Delaware drops to No. 6 after suffering its first loss, while Montana, Eastern Washington, New Hampshire and Wofford remain in the same position as last week to round out the top ten.

Bethune-Cookman, the lowest-ranked undefeated team in this week’s poll, improved to 7-0 on the year with a 23-10 win over North Carolina Central. The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and relied on a strong defensive effort, which forced four turnovers and scored one touchdown, to hold on to an important road win.

Chattanooga (No. 23) and Grambling State (No. 25) make its first appearance of the season into the top 25.

Falling out of the rankings this week are Furman and Northern Arizona.

Eleven conferences are represented in the poll, the most so far this season. The Colonial Athletic Association leads the way with seven ranked teams, while the Big Sky, Missouri Valley and Southern Conferences each have three ranked teams. The Ohio Valley and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conferences have two teams each, while the Ivy League, and the Big South, Great West, Southland and the Southwest Athletic Conferences each have one team in this week’s poll.

FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.

So if we win out by an avg. of let's just say 30. Any chance we don't finish in the top 10?

If a couple top 10 teams lose to any team ranked 11 or above I think we have a chance

If we win out. We're top 10. I've said this all year.

I wouldnt say the most undeserving. I mean if you really look at what the teams have done this year, outside the top 5 none of the teams have done much more than we have to distinguish themselves. Outside of JMU beating tech, but JMU is falling quickly and their schedule stays very tough.

If we win out we should easily be in the 6-8 range just based off the fact that several of the teams above us play each other. What also sucks is that if we would've beaten Robert Morris we would be in the top 1o and finish somewhere in the top 5. I think the fact that we have been doing what we do for several years now has atleast gotten us some respect, now we just have to take that next step.

12 is a touch high, but i think 15th is about right. Is that really way too high? Chris, you would be a better person to answer since you have followed those other teams more than most of us, but really outside of Delaware and the top 5 I just dont see that many distinguishing wins this year or if there are it seems to be just one win a piece.

Chris,

You have B-CU at 12, yet you think LU isn't good enough to be 12. I don't see a WAAAAAY huge gap between them. I agree that BC-U has a better resume, but I don't think you can knock someone for having LU that high. I agree that it's too high based on the perception of what being number 12 means, but with the way this season has gone, it's tough to push teams ahead of LU.

Particularly Big Sky schools. Those are the main culprit that, if you have them ranked where I have them, LU starts to slide up the poll. I think Montana has been way overrated all season. The loss to Cal Poly has been ignored, and that's a shame. The Griz did nothing out of conference, and are rewarded for being "the Griz". They shouldn't be as separated from UNI in the polls, since each have similar resumes.

I agree with your assessment that 12-25 are tough to differentiate tho.

I think Liberty should be somewhere around No. 15-16 and should probably stay there, though with the nature of polls, teams will drop with losses and somebody has to move up.

Just looking at the teams below Liberty in the poll:
13. Montana State -- has a win at home over Eastern Washington, which I suppose is about as impressive as going to Ball State and winning.

14. Richmond -- probably about right.

15. JMU -- beat Liberty head to head and has a better FBS win. Three losses and is stumbling.

16. Bethune-Cookman -- undefeated and has gone on the road to beat the preseason MEAC fave.

and skipping a bit to ...

23. Chattanooga -- coming off a solid win at Furman and the only losses were by a combined five points to the teams ranked 1-2. This 5-2 is much better than Liberty's 5-2.

I would move MSU, BC and Chatty above Liberty, which would put LU in that 15-16 range.

The respect factor of the last few years does have something to do with LU moving up so much. And I think people are writing the Robert Morris loss off as a fluke. It doesn't hurt that Robert Morris has played very well since that game, either. And VMI's win over Charleston Southern makes the Flames' total domination of the Keydets in Lexington look really good. That game was over after two series.

You're right, though. Outside of the top 7, it's really tough to get a read on where everyone should be ranked. It's been a challenge putting a ballot together every week.

Hmm. Saying WAAAY too high seems off base, since we're talking about a difference of two or three spots. Haha.

+1.

0-2 vs. top 25 (also top 70) in FCS - with both teams below us......one win over Ball State....which is quickly turning into crap.

Last year SC State was about 10 spots above their computer rankings. Last week Liberty was already close to 20 spots over. We're getting a lot of love we haven't earned. I don't mind, but it's worth stating - We are not a top 15 team right now. Close, yes...but not yet.
