PPS: what was the deal between Danny and Mills after the game? Whining about the last TD?

Did anybody see one of CSU's Athletic Trainers step in to pop BJ Hayes as he was running out of bounds after a catch? It was in the first quarter with about 6:30 minutes left in the quarter or 22 minutes into the DVR recording if you recorded it. Not good not good at all!

Now that Im home after a very long and tiring day, here are my thoughts:

Mike Brown...really the only issues I had were the three interceptiuons, and the not quite finding Summers on a few of those fade routes. He underthrew him twice and overthrew him another three times. he hits those and this game is a WHOLE LOT less close

CSU had their chances to get over the top but LU once again is able to make the plays that are why CSU has now lost 5 straight overall in the series and 5 in a row in Lynchburg.

I felt bad seeing Toscano on the sideline. when I was walking to get ready for halftime I wished him well on his recovery and passed them along to one of the coaches as well

I was definitely bummed by the students as well...we're supposed to be the craziest students in the conference...yesterday did not confirm that...

To TTL and Keenan...I read your little exchange over on CS.com and you two should be ASHAMED of yourselves!! You two are acting like a couple of spoiled brats and that is certainly not the sort of thing you want to portray...TTL, respect is not something that is given, it is earned and Keenan, it is possible to disagree with someone and not come off like the north end of a southbound donkey...

I never went to an undergraduate college that had a football team, but I do remember how hungry college students get. Maybe they just had to leave for dinner. Let's remember, their attendance was much better for an evening game last week, that started after the dinner meal.

Alumni, show the students some love: they have to eat! Plus, this is midterms week, so many of them have tests/papers due Monday-Wednesday before Fall Break.

DR wanted to run the clock out...and go home happy...but Mills decided to call a timeout...so Coach Rocco was like...

and so he called another play, Brown threw a TD pass to Summers and that was that.

Now we're making excuses about the rot closing and Tilley being open? Let's just call a spade a spade. Our students sucked today and this showed they definitely weren't there for the football game. They want a big time team and big time facilities but they're not willing to be big time fans.
Oh, so you can call a spade a spade and talk crap about 1000 girls who don't know what a first down is for leaving the game, but I can't call a spade a spade and say what I feel about the team and the coaching without being called a bad fan who throws the team under the bus?

Got it, Jon. Geeze, I once was lost, but now I'm found.

I'd bet most of the fans who left don't care about having a big time team or facilities. They might "think it's cool" if it happened, but they don't really have a passion for it. So they don't care to stay.

YOU'RE the one who wants us to be big time. So you slam the fans when they don't act how you want.
I really think you should be sedated

Hello all, just joined the forum and looking forward to participating! I've been to all LU home games this year and i'm starting to think that maybe losing Aldreakis this year was a bigger setback for our running game than I thought. I know the blocking hasn't been that great, but there's something to be said about having a runner that can punish you for making the tackle and pushing the pile when there's not a lot there. With that being said, DR and the offensive staff may have found something today with the big fullback. I'm wondering if we will line up under center and give him the ball some out of the backfield. We had it with Jennings, Aldreakis appeared to be someone that was going to give us some of that, and maybe giving a few carries to the big guy can let teams know that we can hand out some punishment with our run game when we need to.

With that being said, great to be on board! GO FLames!

Yes, we did. I wouldn't be surprised to see them give SBU a game again this year. Certainly a game that could have gone either way, the importance of that fumble at the goal line can't be stated enough, that changed the game completely.

Impressive. I don't know what the first bolded part has to do with any of this. Actually, could you please explain this to me?

And the second has to be a classic BJism.

ttl was talking about not being given any respect in one of his posts over on CS and then he talked about Keenan "throwing his toys aroung the room". If you want people to respect you, you dont talk about them that sort of way...it's possible to disagree with someone and be alot more respectful toward them.

I was told a mess of them went and sat in the upper deck on the other side to get out of the sun.
Having sat on the mid deck on the home side and seeing the officer keep running folks off that were looking for seats too long in an already full section, I can see where that was true. I wondered why folks kept coming up so far into the game when there were clearly more seats available on the other side. Makes more sense now. It was very nice not sitting in sun for most of the game.

First off, the stadium was every bit as good as advertised. But I think we have beaten that topic to death the past week. Suffice it to say that Mrs. Sly and my kids were every bit as blown away as I was.

As for the student section, it was a major disappointment. I passed by some of them at halftime when I had to go get a camera battery from my car. And a bunch were bragging about how they stood out by wearing white. I mean they were actually bragging about it. But I digress. Perhaps this game was played up enough after the thrill of the stadium debut. But by my estimates, it was the poor student showing that caused the dip in attendance from last week. The lower section of the baptist side and the north end of the upper deck were packed. We sat on the south end of the upper deck near SJ & CJ and while there was available seating, it was fairly well represented. The students simply did not pull their weight. Whether that is over the 'Rot issue or whether they were simply not informed of the magnitude of what was transpiring on the field is yet to be determined. I would certainly expect more out of them moving forward. And for the record, the shade on the Baptist side was extremely nice on a warm day.

As for the game itself, I love FlamerBob's ideas in regard to Matt Bevins. His confidence is clearly shaken. He seems like a completely different kicker not only field goal attempts but kickoffs as well. He seemed tentative on his boot that bonked off the right upright. Hopefully he turns the corner soon because we will need him at some point the rest of the way.

Offensively, SirChauncey showed me some spark today that I hadn't seen from him since last season. Perhaps it was because CSU was playing back to defend the deep threat by Chauncey had a great vision finding seams today.

Mike clearly was not very sharp today. All three of his INTs were simply bad passes. I realize that he is still relatively inexperienced as a QB but he needs to make better decisions at times. But I will say Mike looked terrific running the ball at times today. He seemed like the old Mike.

I laugh hearing every complain about the multiple fades to Chris. Is that not exactly what nearly everyone on here has been calling for the past few weeks. Give credit to CSU for making it difficult. And yes, Chris was pushing off quite a bit. But if the refs are willing to let you play, he would be silly not to do it.

Defensively I was pleased to see us keep the Bucs in check most of the day. Toscano was giving us fits with his feet before his injury. But I give credit to Coach Clark for adjusting his schemes when the backup QB came into the game. The kid never really found his rhythm and we really stopped the run fairly well.

It was great to be back in Williams Stadium. I wish I could have chatted with more of you before, during & after the game. But thanks to those who shared their burgers & dogs with my family. And it should be noted that between SumItUp's crew and the Sly Fox clan, there are kids who are growing up dreaming of coming to LU.
To be quite honest with you, I don't think the student side was represented so well because it was homecoming weekend and A LOT of the students avoid the campus like the plague because they cant handle the crowd/traffic. I know a good many of students that even left Lynchburg for the weekend. To me, the crowd and traffic are what truly make a football game that more intense and excited but for students that really dont care that much about athletics or their team, they freak out at it. So really and truly the student side was not very impressive because they were either hiding in their dorm it went home. LOL.

Most students anywhere can be bandwagon fans. Several years ago here in Tuscaloosa (the Shula Era) there was a big uproar because students weren't using their tickets. There were threats to reduce the # of student tickets available and give them to rabid alumni. There were conversations all over talk radio about how spoiled they were and how they weren't true fans. 5 years later there is no more talk of that. Why? Better product on the field.

It is a balance. Better facilities help with recruiting which helps put better athletes on the field and hopefully more effective teams. A winning team or even a team that fans believe is putting forth their best effort and getting better each week makes folks want to come out and support them. The more folks who come out the more other folks want to join them just to be a part of the party. However, no one likes to watch a no name team with 1 or 2 wins go up and down the field on their defense every week. Even the stereotypical girl who knows nothing about football can sense when a crowd is frustrated or disinterested. When that happens they go off in search of the next fun thing to do... It happens everywhere.

The thing to follow closely the next several years is the recruiting. Our facilities should give us an advantage over our peers there. If that happens we will start to put a better product on the field (particularly on D since I believe there are fewer top D prospects each year than on O). A better product will result in more fans in the seats. It will happen. LU is a sleeping giant. It has been for years. When we break through it will be like an avalanche racing down hill: Scary but Awesome!

Excellent post ALAFlamesFan. Sounds like there was a distinct difference in atmosphere between last week and this week (I missed yesterday's game) but everyone has to realize that the students have a choice. You start with some of them not caring about sports and add that Savannah St and Charleston Southern do not inspire even the most passionate of college football fans to get excited and you get to a place where you won't have extreme excitement for every game. Someone had posted earlier, and it is true, the student atmosphere yesterday was more than likely much better than what most of our FCS competitors had. As the product continues to get better, more and more students will attend and stay for the entire game. Even with that, outside of long time Liberty supporters and Big South experts, it is hard to get super excited about playing many of the teams in our conference as they don't bring name recognition nor do they have a football tradition. Go Flames.

I really appreciated how they got Pete involved with the offense yesterday! I think the coaches will now have more confidence giving him more touches, but I'd really love to see a straight up rushing attempt. Some solid carries by a big FB might be the missing link in our rushing game. Gagliardi is the real deal!

so in campus church Johnnie chastised us for leaving at halftime at the football game. saying we had a lack of commitment, that if we cant stay and support our team for three hours then maybe its indicative of us being a more apathetic and non-committal student body then he feared.

someone said a meal swipe option at the football game would keep the student from leaving and i agree completely with them. no one wants to spend 7 meal points on a slice of pizza and a drink. i chose to starve and support the team, but a lot of other people chose to eat dinner instead.

i think night games will almost always be more hyped and have a better atmosphere than day games. no sun, blinding us (which btw the best part about the press tower from a students perspective is simply that it makes the sun set earlier.) and food in the stomach makes things much more enjoyable.

Observations from a guy who saw his first game in the "new" Bill:
1. Stadium was unreal. It changes the entire feel of the campus. I posted one suggestion in the construction thread, so I won't repeat it here.
2. The atmosphere was a ton better than it used to be. It wasn't as great as I expected, but that is probably due to all of the hype on there from last week. We are going to get there...it just won't happen over night.
3. Mike Brown reminded me of the old Michael Vick yesterday. Very athletic, not super-accurate, tucked the ball a few times when he had a guy or two doing jumping jacks in the CSU secondary, got the job done.
4. The defense is streaky. Great hitting and tackling at times, flag football maneuvers on a couple of occasions.
5. Chris Summers is great, but you can only go to the fade route so many times in a row. It was almost like a 5th grader playing Madden and just picking the same play over and over.
6. 1998 called and wants its top 40 music back.
7. Bevins needs to visit a psychologist. I could tell from the second deck that he was tight out there. You've got the ablity, Matt. Relax and kick the ball!
8. Cheerleaders throwing t-shirts while we have the ball, causing us to call a TO is JV on several levels.
9. My two-year-old son loved Sparky. If your kid is afraid of him, you need to work on some toughness at your house.
10. Gagliardi is fun to watch. Please get him the ball more often!
11. Be patient with the program. It's come a long way since 1-10. All of us want a national championship this year (and next), but we aren't there yet. Enjoy the success and watch the improvement as it happens!

Thats was my idea, and it was something I wish I had when I was there. Being able to skip the boring band performance that was the same every week, get a meal on a meal swipe, and wait for the second half.

I have seen multiple Facebook statuses and photo albums from LU students that basically indicate their schedule yesterday was "Football, dinner, hockey".

You may think the ROT and Tilley and Hockey are "excuses", but thats what's important to LU students. SJ, you never lived on campus, you simply don't understand the culture. FF30 and I have lived on campus, we understand what our dormmates are like. They like to go to football games, but not many are committed enough to stick around for a whole game unless it was against someone we'll never play at home like Tech or UVA.

I think the JMU game was a good display of how our students can and will be great fans for a football game. How easily we forget the student support VERY EARLY for that game, and a lot of them stayed despite a stupidly bad rain storm. Kids from the area know JMU, a lot have friends there. Most LU kids wouldn't know Charleston Southern was a college or a railway company unless they try to learn more about LU sports.

This drove me bonkers. Between the sound being horribly low, how in the heck do you throw t shirts when the team is lining up with 13 seconds left on the play clock. If I was Rocco, I would ream the game day marketing people for this. Unacceptable!

Say what you will about a "lack of committment" on the part of students; if we schedule a game at 3:30, then arrangements need to be made for students who are on a meal plan to have dinner. Either the dining hall needs to stay open late, or they need to have food available for them at the stadium. 18-21 year old kids need to eat, not all of them are in a position to pay for food at concessions, and even if they are they shouldn't have to under these circumstances. To the extent that students left so they could eat dinner, I totally put this on the school as poor planning.
