I am in the class of 2013 and have been hearing things about moving to the CAA and even the ACC (division 1-A), and would like to see if either of these are a possibility while I am still enrolled at Liberty. I think moving to the CAA is a posibility but is there any proof in this assumption?

Zero chance of us getting an invite to the ACC -- the CAA isn't out of the question but unlikely. We've talked about this ad-nasuem on here, if you do a little digging you can find some of the previous threads.

So is the Big East a possiblility? There are a lot of private colleges in that conference so I would think that we would fit in just fine although I believe the private colleges are Catholic. If we pushed the 1A issue that would be a realistic possiblility. I would be happy in the Colonial conference. A great geographical fit, college's and great competition. It would definately help our recruiting across the board.

Yea, Colby, for the love of God, please use a question mark (?) next time. We old hags can't take that kind of "great expectations."

BuryYourDuke wrote:Our student to faculty ratio is the worst in the state, faculty pay is among the lowest for schools of our size, and our academic facilities still lag behind as well. We have near 100% admission rate, despite promises that this was going to change.
THIS IS ALL FALSE INFORMATION. OUR STUDENT TO FACULTY TO RATIO IS 23:1 WHICH IS VERY GOOD BUT ALL OF OUR FACULTY TEACH. MANY SCHOOLS PUBLISH A BETTER RATIO BUT MANY OF THEIR BEST FACULTY ARE ON SABBATICAL OR ARE DOING RESEARCH OR ARE OFF WRITING BOOKS. THEY NEVER HAVE ANY INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS. OUR TEACHERS ARE IN THE CLASSROOM AND OUR RATIO OF FACULTY WHO ACTUALLY HAVE CONTACT WITH STUDENTS IS MUCH BETTER THAN MANY SCHOOLS WHO CLAIM A TO HAVE BETTER STUDENT-FACULTY RATIO IN ORDER TO GET A HIGH RANKING IN US NEWS. OUR FACULTY PAY IS NOW COMPETITIVE AND, WHEN YOU FACTOR IN WHAT OUR PROFESSORS ARE ABLE TO EARN BY TEACHING ONLINE AND OVERLOAD COURSES ALONG WITH THE LOW COST OF LIVING IN LYNCHBURG, WE HAVE NO PROBLEMS RECRUITING TOP QUALITY FACULTY. OUR ACADEMIC FACILITIES ARE COMPARABLE TO DIV I-A SCHOOLS IN THE WAYS THAT MATTER. THEY MAY NOT BE ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECES BUT THEY ARE FUNCTIONAL AND ONE OF THE REASONS I WAS ASKED TO SERVE ON THE GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION WAS TO SHOW PUBLIC SCHOOLS HOW LU HAS BUILT FUNCTIONAL ACADEMIC SPACE FOR LESS THAN $100 PER SF WHILE THE PUBLICS HAVE BEEN SPENDING $250+ PER SF FOR BEAUTIFUL BUT NOT NECESSARILY FUNCTIONAL ACADEMIC SPACE. FINALLY, OUR SELECTIVITY IS NOT NEAR 100%. WE SPENT HOURS MEETING WITH MOODY'S, STANDARD & POOR'S AND FITCH RATING AGENCIES THIS WEEK AND EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT, WHILE LU REPORTED A 94% SELECTIVITY RATE, IT WAS ONLY BECAUSE WE ONLY REPORTED "APPLICATIONS PROCESSED" NOT APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. FOR EXAMPLE, FOR THIS ACADEMIC YEAR, WE RECEIVED 28,000+ APPLICATIONS BUT ONLY REPORTED ABOUT 5245 BECAUSE OUR RECRUITING DEPARTMENT STOPPED WORKING WITH STUDENTS TO FULLY PROCESS THEIR APPLICATIONS AFTER WE IDENTIFIED 4975 WHO WE FELT WERE COMPATIBLE WITH LU AND WERE QUALIFIED ACADEMICALLY AND FINANCIALLY. IF WE HAD WANTED TO PLAY THE US NEWS GAME, WE COULD HAVE CONTINUED TO WORK WITH ANOTHER 5000 OR 10000 OF THE APPLICANTS TO FULLY PROCESS THEIR APPLICATIONS. THEN, WE COULD HAVE REPORTED A LOWER SELECTIVITY RATE. BUT OUR GOAL IS NOT TO BE RANKED BY US NEWS. IT IS TO FULFILL OUR MISSION AS A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL. THE EXERCISE OF THE PAST WEEK WITH THESE NATIONAL RATING AGENCIES REVEALED THAT LU MEETS OR EXCEEDS THE PERFORMANCE OF A AND AA RATED SCHOOLS LIKE PEPPERDINE, YESHIVA, SMU, GWU, SYRACUSE, WAKE FOREST, TCU, LOYOLA, NUY, CASE WESTERN AND MANY OTHERS IN ALMOST ALL OF THE CATEGORIES USED TO DETERMINE THE FINANCIAL STRENGTH OF UNIVERSITIES. THESE CATEGORIES INCLUDE EXPENDABLE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO DEBT, EXPENDABLE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO OPERATIONS, OPERATING MARGIN, AVERAGE OPERATING MARGIN, OPERATING CASHFLOW MARGIN (WE ACTUALLY WERE OFF THE CHARTS ON THE LAST THREE), NET TUITION PER STUDENT, CHANGE IN NET TUITION, TOTAL TUITION DISCOUNT, DIRECT DEBT SERVICE COVERAGE. WE ARE FAR AHEAD OF WHERE EVEN WE AS MANAGEMENT THOUGHT WE WERE IN OUR QUEST TO BECOME A WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY. WE ARE ON THE WAY, BOYS!

Straight from the Big Man's mouth! Thank you so much for putting this info out. Nothing squashes rumors like the Chancellor of a school telling it like it is :D I love that you're on this site! You are truly a man's man!

Another point that you are missing buryyourduke: The universities who have so many faculty engaged in research or publishing are actually receiving credit for paying teachers who are not really teaching. That means that their faculty compensation appears higher than it really is. US News rates universities based on how much they "spend" on faculty regardless of whether the faculty receiving the compensation are focused on providing an education to the students of the school or not. For example, if a university spends money to pay PHDs to research global warming instead of educating students, that university gets credit for that compensation as if the university had paid that money to professors for teaching students. Strip away all the salaries being paid to faculty who are not really teaching and LU rates very highly in the faculty compensation category.

There's an open grad assistant position if you're any good at Photoshop and Final Cut.

I've never done those things before. Like I said I just take photos and videos for the fun of it.

Man. BYD, you just got destroyed. It's interesting to know that I should never expect LU to ever get a decent ranking on the US News rankings. On the one hand I've been arguing on this very messageboard forever that the methodology is ridiculous. On the other hand, those rankings, as flawed as they are, are used by employers and maybe even potential conference affiliates. So it's understandable yet also disappointing that we'll likely always trail in those stupid rankings.

Good point. Perception and PR spin = reality for way too many folks. While we can make a great argument for those who will listen (just like our chancellor just did) the fact remains that those rankings do matter in the perception dept. I believe Coach Rocco just stated this week how for him (and many others) when he thinks of universities he thinks of their football programs. Improving our football program will improve our schools image (fairly or not). The same goes for US News rankings. I am not arguing that we should compromise any core principles but if spending a little $ to process all 28,000 applications so our ranking looks better then it might be marketing/pr $ well spent.

I know the chancellor knows all this too so don't take this post as bashing. Just pointing out something I have been learning over and over. Fair or not: perception is important.

I agree, ALAFlames. We do need to do a better job of communicating to the outside what is happening here. That is the next step. Oh, and BYD, I should not have called your information "false". I should have used the word inaccurate. Sorry about that. Now, I am headed for the HC parade.

@JLFJR: I wonder if US News would print the information you just layed out if you were to send it to them as a letter to the editor?

JFLJR - It is an absolute pleasure to have you here to keep us crazy LU supporters informed. This is no doubt an exciting time to be associated with LU. It will be great to watch all these changes and moves happen. It's a lot better than when I was a student in the late 80s. Man I missed out. But it was still a great place even then.

Rooster, guess we had to wander in the wilderness before walking into the promised land. I agree with you though. The wildnerness years weren't that bad.

The thing about LU that amazes me every time I think about it is that LU is only 40 years old. What other school has accomplished as much as LU in any area in just 40 years. As far as I can tell no one has. It really does just shows that God has blessed the school.

Sorry about not posting a (?) in the title of this blog.

to Chancellor Falwell,

It is so cool to see you on this blog and interacting with us (the students/alumni), I believe that is just another thing that makes Liberty different, therefore better.

It was great to be welcomed into your box at the game today, and I appreciate the time you took to take a picture with us dorm 8ters.

GO FLAMES!
