this report is very interesting. i am very surprised about the murder/manslaughter and the number of sex crimes. It does appear that the bigger problem is drugs/alcohol. my question to any student is do you feel safe on campus and what do you think of the police department? here is a copy of the report which is on page 4 of the file.

Yeah, the murder/manslaughter is a bit disconcerting. It's also puzzling as I feel like that should have made the news. I do suppose the disclaimer at the bottom could make a huge difference, though.

"These numbers disclose statistics from reports of alleged criminal incidents."

If they're just alleged incidents, I'm not sure how much it really means.

The liquor law violations do seem to be sharply up from 2008, though. Boozehounds.

aside from the manslaughter charge I am not really surprised...people drink in the dorms..it happens, some are underage, they get caught. It happened when I was there and with an even larger student body its happening even more. Regardless of the guidelines in place these are still college kids

Thanks, I couldnt figure out what it was.

I would think as our applications increase and our enrollment is capped that we should start to see a decrease in numbers here soon. Interesting report, I think it's hard to grasp numbers without a comparison with another school similar size or bigger schools broken down into ratios

that body last year was found a mile away from campus. i dont care. i feel safe. i actually worry more about a terrorist attack making us martyrs (probably just b/c im taking terrorism [Govt 480] this semester) more than i do about petty crime, and if nothing else the other stuff is just another reason to walk girls back to their dorm at night.

good point HMO on the comparison to another school our size. good find on the murder. i was thinking of the main campus and totally forgot about the other land LU owns.

On a related note somewhat, is it still poorly lit down in the ravine area? And on campus in general.

I know there was talk about making it brighter around campus at night but nothing ever seemed to change. I mean better lighting isn't going to stop all sexual crimes, but it would go a long way in preventing a lot of it.

But you are right HMO, compared to other schools our size I am sure these numbers are fairly small, it would be interesting to see other crime reports for schools

Medic can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a robbery is a crime against a person (ie. "stick 'em up and give me what you have"). A burglary is sneaking in and stealing property while you aren't there.

Not focusing on the ravine, but University BLVD (especially right in front of the prayer chapel, RH 17 up to the Religion Hall) at night is not lit well, at all. Many times I've seen a student almost too late as they step out. It's not like I'm flying down the street....I'm going the speed limit. The lights just aren't bright enough there. Throw in the shadows from the trees & it just gets worse.

I always felt safe on campus, and considering the fact that our numbers are now over 11,000 on campus, I think our liquor law violations are extremely small compared to other schools, especially ones our size. It would be interesting to see the actualy comparisons.

Here's the report for Longwood:
http://www.american-school-search.com/s ... university

As you can see, a school half the size of LU in a town 1/4 the size of Lynchburg has nearly twice the liquor law violations, though the report appears to be based from 2006-2008.

It's just a white tablecloth and a couple of steaks away from a fancy date.

robbery: taking something from someone else by force or threat of force

burglary: entering the premises of another with an intent to commit ANY criminal act

good question tho- most people equate them and they are actually quite different

PS: it would appear that burgs are down but you have a torch running around down there. Hmmm.

one thing I will say is campus policing is quite different from typical muni policing.

It behooves our supervisors to show good stats- we're doing our job, justifies the expense, makes people feel safe.

On a college campus where you really dont WANT to show a ton of crime... maybe not.

Not saying things are intentionally under-reported, just that there's different ways to charge the same crime- depending on the level of aggression of those in charge
