—As I mentioned in my notebook in Sunday’s News & Advance, Liberty football operations director Paul Rutigliano gave an update of the Flames’ future scheduling. Here’s that update again:

Liberty assistant athletics director for football operations Paul Rutigliano confirmed Saturday that the Flames will play a home-and-home series with Richmond, beginning in 2013 at UR’s Robins Stadium.

The Spiders will visit Lynchburg in 2014.

The Spiders will visit Lynchburg in 2014. Rutigliano also said Liberty was working on completing the 2011 and 2012 schedules, and that the school is in talks with both William & Mary and Old Dominion to fill dates in those years.
Interesting. I hope it can be done.

From a spider fan on their message board:
I like it. Look, if we are as good as we think, we will beat them regularly. If not, then I guess we weren't as good as we thought, or maybe they were just better. We aren't really going to lose many kids to Liberty from a recruiting standpoint anyway, so I don't think we have anything to fear there.

Another one:
With that being said, I would love nothing more then to pound them into the ground when we play them. Liberty plays in a weak conference and will never be up to CAA standards(The competitive programs at least), they have a lot of steps to climb before they overtake JMU, WM, UR, Hampton and soon to be ODU before I would consider them to be a real player in FCS, let alone Virginia. Rocco will probably be gone by the time this series starts anyhow, anyone know how dismal they were before he showed up. Can anyone tell me the biggest win in Liberty football history is?
:rofl

Before we make it seem like all the Richmond fans think like this, after reading through the thread, it's pretty evident that most of them at least respect us. Some think this is a great game and some don't like it because we're a tough OOC opponent. Obviously you have some that are stupid, but the majority have been pretty respectful.

It is exciting to see this series scheduled. As many of the Richmond fans say, this is an opportunity to keep travel at a minimum, but still see a good OOC opponent. Virginia seems to be developing quite the collection of solid FCS teams; after years of watching Liberty playing D2 and NAIA (Ipredate many of you!), it is nice to see Liberty included in that grouping.
