It's college football season everywhere -- except in Boston

The college football season is underway and nobody cares in New England.

OK, I'm exaggerating. There are plenty of parents and girlfriends of local college gridders to care about the football fortunes of Boston College, UMass, UConn, Harvard and Holy Cross.

But outside of New York City it would be hard to find a place more apathetic toward college football.

It's true. Boston is a pro town and has never given a rip about BC in any sport. Uconn is a bit too new to the FBS scene to have a big die hard base yet. The rest, I don't know why you'd expect anybody to care about them. But really, can you blame them? 100 teams playing each other over the course of 3 month or so with no final resolution? What is the point? To figure out what players get drafted where?

I guess it's one of the big differences in where my wife grew up & where I grew up. We LIVE for college football & basketball in the South. Pro sports have a following, but overall take a back seat to the college game.

I can't imagine not wanting to watch any of the big games coming up this weekend.

#20 FSU vs. #7 Oklahoma
Michigan vs. Notre Dame
#13 Miami vs. #2 tOSU
#19 PSU vs. #1 BAMA

That's enough to keep me from cutting the grass, walking the dog.....maybe even taking a shower. Without a LU home game & a UNC game, that's a great Saturday.

Houston's a pro town and hasn't really given UH or Rice the time of day since the SWC died under Kyle's "leadership" 15 years ago. But the city is nuts about UT and A&M with passion for the rest of the Big XII South & LSU not far behind.

It is a cop-out to blame apathy toward college sports on pro sports. New York & Boston are odd sports cities.

Ok then, how come everytime I've been north of Pennsylvania, most of the sports talk I overheard in cafes, restaraunts, on the streets, etc... revolved around NY's or Boston's pro teams?

Because you're in PA. They're saying people in the actual NE don't care and that's pretty true.

There are certain parts of the country that are football areas (and certain parts are college football, and certain parts are pro) and certain parts that are basketball (and to lesser extents, baseball (and to lesser extents than that, hockey. I'm looking at you, Buffalo))*.

The northeast just isn't a football region. There's nothing wrong with that. I would argue that they're a "baseball" region**

*That's right, a parentheses inside a parentheses. I feel like I'm in "Inception".

** I know, I know, you're hearing about Randy Moss and Brady and football a lot, referencing that region, and not about baseball. Well, to that I say, the national media (re: ESPN) is so obviously Boston centric, and the Red Sox are mediocre this year, so what else are they going to do.
