Everything went as planned. We dominated on both sides, tons of praise for all. Just a couple of things that could be shored up. Defense allowed several passes on third and long to go for first downs, otherwise they looked good. The opening drive by St. Francis (very 4th quarter JMUish from last year) makes me a little concerned about giving up opening drives to a team of better quality, that can actually turn around and play defense. Other than that, Mike Brown underthrew Summers on the sideline at one point. Summers was WIDE open and streaking towards the endzone, but he had to slow down and wait on the pass. He made the completion, but it should have been a TD, instead of out at the 3 or 4. We finished off the drive with a score, so I guess "alls well that ends well". All the other throws by Brown were spot on, and I laughed really hard when Summers came down with the jump ball in the endzone to end the half. Ridiculous. You had to have been there to fully appreciate that one.

I had a few concerns, but chalked them up to first-game jitters and LU's knack for starting slowly, especially against opponents they should beat handily. We've got to get out of the gate quickly and keep the pressure on.

This is the fifth time in 6 games that LU has scored 50 or more points and the first time since 2004 where we have scored 50 or more in the home opener (West Virginia Tech that day).

We have outscored the Red FLash 120-17 in the two meetings

post 1st quarter i think the guys did great! yea, brown over threw a few time or under threw but other than a few different plays this kid is going to have an amazing year!!! I was almost hoping he could throw a few more snaps and get to 400yrd... oh well. Our WR's where AWESOME. Summers had me cheering with every catch!!!! mad props to kelly, hayes, and broggins as well!!! the guys made it happen. I thought SirChauncey was awesome. Chase Barnett did a great job as well!!!!!

Over all I really look forward to continuing to watch how these boys do! I do expect great things this season!!! Lets just try to not have to many first quarters like today, but as someone else said, i guess its typical liberty fashion...

Other than that... i think i ticked off SuperJon enough for one day... nothing but love man. its all good in the hood. haha

If my math is correct, we had 4 receivers who AVERAGED 108 yards per game.

RECEIVING No. Yds TD Lg
SUMMERS, Chris 7 129 2 40
HAYES, B.J. 7 110 1 49
KELLY, Pat 4 115 1 75
DeARMON, Kyle 4 78 2 27

I wonder if that is any kind of an LU record?

Well, from the SID's:

"The Flames threw for 452 yards and six touchdowns against the Red Flash on Saturday. The yardage figure was the second most ever by a Liberty team in program history and the most since the Flames threw for 407 yards at South Florida on Oct. 27, 2001."

So the overall yardage is impressive compared to the rest of school history. I wonder if Tommy Shaver made a couple catches if we would have set the record?

Also...

Liberty has only had one other game in program history where three players finished a contest with 100 or more receiving yards. Tony Dews (106 yards), Robert Butz (104 yards) and Dion Cook (100 yards) first accomplished the feat against Toledo on Sept. 17, 1994.

Wrap-up from the SIDs ...

Liberty cruised past St. Francis, Pa., 52-7, in the 2010 season opener at historic Lynchburg City Stadium.

Liberty's season opener against St. Francis, Pa., turned out to be a throwback day in more ways than one. The Flames aired the ball out and rolled off 52-unanswered points en route to 52-7 win, Saturday afternoon, in front of 8,286 fans at historic Lynchburg City Stadium.

The contest was the first Liberty had played at Lynchburg City Stadium since Oct. 7, 1989, when the Flames upended No. 19 Eastern Illinois, 9-7. Liberty moved into Williams Stadium two weeks later and downed Towson State, 37-18, on Homecoming Weekend.

Just got back in a little while ago. All in all a great day. That stadium's impressive. Can't wait to get in there Oct 2.

We came out flat in the first quarter as I'm sure ya'll have talked about. St Francis was forcing us to throw and Streeter was a little slow IMO of opening up the playbook. Once he did it was all over. We've got to be able to run the ball better. I'm sure we will be.

Mike Brown and Chris Summers are going to be a blast the next 2 years. Perhaps our best ever QB-WR combo by time they're done.

Mike Brown 17-22 passing. Two were drops and one underthrown after receiver ran wrong pattern and defender was closing, so he threw low so as to not be intercepted. Would like to see more dominance in the run game. Against good teams it will be important to control line of scrimmage and clock.

Korrey looked like he hasn't played a game in two years. I think he'll bounce out of it. Chauncey looked really really good. I didn't realize how fast Barnett was either.

Summers has gotten really, really good. He made everything look easy today. Pat Kelly is also really good and has great hands.

Chris Mayo led the team in tackles and I never remember hearing his name. He may have gotten credit for some of O'Donnell's though.

I really like our defense. Just gotta get the over pursuing down on our blitzes. Some guys ran past ball carriers today.

The two biggest issues of the day:

Running game: It wasn't that good today. I'm not concerned with it though...yet. We left a lot of our running game playbook in the book today. We didn't run a single play out of the pistol. There wasn't a single option run called. I don't think there were any designed runs for Mike today (maybe one?). Mike also didn't take off and run much because our receivers were open. If we still have problems once we add in our other stuff, I might get concerned, but for now I'm just going to chalk it up to a vanilla playbook.

3rd Down Defense: We let them get a few passes in over the middle on third down. That's been a problem in the past. The thing is, today's problem was not the same problem as the past. In the past, it was wide receivers and tight ends down the seam getting around our zone. Today it was the running back coming around and being the check down guy after we've blitzed. Our man-to-man coverage in the secondary was spot on but that one guy kept getting around because the linebackers weren't getting the quarterback. We were penetrating the line but not getting the QB.

Overall though, we played a good game. We've got a ton of weapons and we're very deep. I like our chances this year.

And Tyler Brennan was 9-10 (his only incomplete was an intentional throwaway when no one was open - a rare event!). I agree that the only two concerns were the first defensive series, which I think/hope we can chalk up to coming out "flat", and the lack of dominance in the running game. I do believe that the running game will pick up, as all three RBs showed "flashes" (haha!) at times! Wow, Mike Brown and Chris Summers look awesome!

after several hours of reflection:

like everyone else, I was a bit concerned after the first 15 min. Consider this tho- this WAS a DI team. Rebuilding perhaps, but still a DI team. They played hard and obviously came in prepared and willing to fight. There is no shame in being out matched.

Then we woke up. I was surprised that Korrey didn't have a bit more success, but SJ is probably right with that reasoning.

Good to see #24 out there making some noise- tho on the other side of the ball.

WRs are just ridiculous. That was simply pitch and catch out there. You can do that whern Summers is twice the size of the DB covering him tho.

Overall- a "W" like it was supposed to be and a good tune up. Hope we dont come out that flat in the next couple weeks tho or it'll be over quick.

I really think that Summers' TD at the end of the first half was the back breaker. SFU goes in down only 10 with the ball to start the second half, they get a score theyre only down 3. You could sense the massive lift that play gave our guys and they just rode that wave into the locker room and then never got off it until the end of the game.

Tyler had a really nice throw where he zipped it just past a defender and we picked up a first down. It was good to see him get extended time toward the end and he made very good use of it. Kyle DeArmon definitely gets major props...two TDs on the day...I remember his second one Im sitting there and one of the guys sitting behind me is shouting about how he was streaking across the back of the end zomne and Brennan put a perfect ball in there.

I saw...I was delivering a camera case to the home side and saw the TD...my first thought was "drat...they scored already...well if Im gonna be wrong, its better that it happen now and get it out of the way than at the end of the game"

Definitely heard it. Was walking back to the car and I started hearing it again about 15-25 yards behind me. I rolled my eyes and kept moving. I didn't slow down because I knew if I saw the guy with it I probably would have tried to wrap the thing around his neck will all my pent up World Cup frustration.

I noticed that Francis Bah didn't play at all. The buzz is he has looked great in practice. I wonder if he is injured, or if they've decided to redshirt him. The roster says he is a R-freshman, but that makes no sense, since he was just signed this spring.

Lang again writes a great article for us, though I have no idea what this quote means: :dontgetit
Said Kelly: “It was an option play where I could run hitch or run slant. Mike saw the linebacker open his hips up so I just crossed his face.
There's also a nice pic of Summers' Hail Mary catch, which he actually caught on his hip, and the paper copy had a great article on Kyle DeArmon, though I didn't see it in the online version.
