While I want to believe that Rocco will be at Liberty forever I’m not sure that’s realistic. He currently makes around $250k base salary. The lowest paid ACC coaches will make north of $1 mill. That is a big jump in salary that I’m not sure I would pass up. Now maybe LU will be willing to step up his pay scale if/when he is offered an FBS job but from the numbers I’ve seen $1 mill is unheard of at the FCS level.

If you want to be optimistic we can look at Chris Petersen over at Boise who has surely passed on numerous higher paying gigs to stay at Boise State. However you also must remember that Boise St. while not part of a BCS conference is playing FBS football.

As a generality, Like others have said I think the big boys will come calling when we win games that count such as App state or other CAA or SoCon teams in the playoffs. The pay jump from $250k to a 1 million is a significant difference and that might be more entiing than taking an FCs to an FBS level.

In case anyone was thinking from my post on the other thread that I believe Danny Rocco is an LU "lifer", that isn't really what I meant to imply. I just don't think that his leaving is as inevitable as some do.

Does anyone believe that Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier or Pete Carroll will ever be as loved, respected and most important HAPPY as Joe Paterno? There is no doubt that JoePa is a huge role model for Rocco, and I think that may be in our favor.

May I ask how you know that? We're a private school so coach's salaries are not made public. For all we know he could be making more or could be making less.

He makes a lot more than $250,000 base. Think closer to $400K. Though LU is a private school, those numbers are available if you know where to look.

Someone had posted something before with all LU salaries over $100k or maybe it was the top 10 highest paid employees at LU. I think Rocco might have been included on there.

It was one of those tax forms and those are released after a couple of years so that was when he first started before the extension and restructuring and everything.

Well thanks to the reporting of one of FF finest contributors I read the article below a while back admittedly it gives his ’07 salary and a similar source is reporting that number is much higher. So it sounds like 400k is a lot closer to current reality.
I was just assuming the 228k hadn’t increased so much as Rocco said the new contract had nothing to do with wanting a raise.

Look at this great reporting :D

Will Rocco ever leave? He may. I wouldnt be upset if he did because if he gets a new job somewhere he certainly will have earned it with the turnaround he initiated here in the last four seasons.

if the wake job opens up, he will be a top candidate and no one should blame him if he wanted to go to his alma mater to coach. so yeah, i think he will leave at some point.

And I think it could be a Jim Tressel type situation. He moved on from Youngstown State but never forgot who gave him his start and has continually gave back and been a donor at YSU.

I think he'll leave one day, but it will be a day where he thinks he's taken us as far as he can take us. When will that be? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years? 30 years?

I think he may, if in a few years he believes LU will not be able to reach the FBS ranks in the next 25 years, for whatever reasons. Money talks, and big time programs talk too, so who knows. I think tradition also factors in. If he ever left, we would always be a pipeline where he could ship his troubled players and budding young coaches looking for opportunties to become OC, DC, etc...

The fact that his base compensation nearly doubled between 2007 and 2008 is an interesting note in itself. The only access I have to salaries is what's reported on those tax forms, so I have to wait until the end of the fiscal year to see the numbers.

I think he may leave sooner rather than later. I am the biggest Danny Rocco fan in the world, but outside of a strong loyalty to the school there isn't anything holding him here. His youngest child graduates from HS this year so there aren't any real ties to keep him here. Over at LCA they are having the same conversation about his brother Frank!

You are just in flat out trouble maker mode today, right?

Don't kick the man while he is down. I mean we do seem to have some issues with teams we might should not have issues with. I think it's less about game plans, getting the team up, or what ever. It's more about teams getting jacked up for the "biggest game in school history".

No, this does fall squarely on Rocco. He's a terrific coach, and I don't want anyone else as our coach, BUT he's got to figure out what it is. We can't keep having these let downs.

quite honestly, Rocco has done great things with the program and brought us further than we were when he got here. I cant say hes a great coach, though, and dont see him ever getting offered a head coaching job at an ACC school or anything.

It seems that every year he has one of these whoops games. And until last week, we had never really beaten a GREAT opponent. I mean, if we come out next week and beat JMU thats one thing, but really, come on. I think the time is done when we can talk about how great of a coach he is. Great coaches win games like this.
