We are closing in on a new season in England, so I figured it'd be great(for us snobby soccer fans) to start a thread for it.

I also took the liberty of not naming it EPL since.....well Portsmouth.....well you get the idea.

What do you expect from your team this year?

After seeing Portsmouth lose 4-0 to DC United........

Portsmouth will win 3 games next season and get relegated from the Championship League to League 1.

If were lucky the club will just fold. I'm tired of our dirty poor owners.

No. Well they almost did. Here's the simple breakdown:

In Jan, Portsmouth was going to fold. An asian guy Chainrai came in and loaned the club 20Mil to keep afloat. The company went into administration(bankruptcy) and inserted a greek guy Adrianskdjdsbkbokis as the administrator(acting superior officer) to get the club out of debt. He used a backdoor settlement policy(called a CVA) to create an agreement to pay only 20% of debts.

In order to pass this CVA, 75% of creditors needed to accept the settlement in order for it to go through. The HMRC(effectively known as the TaxMan) was open about their refusal to vote for the agreement. They were owed somewhere between 20-30% of the debts, so with their vote Portsmouth could be doomed. When AA(the greek guy) tallied up the debts, he may have inflated the debts of the other creditors in order to balance out the money owed to the Taxman.

So the CVA was passed, but there's now an appeal. On top of all this, Portsmouth has been under a transfer embargo that includes free transfers and out of contract(Portsmouth players who have an expired contract) players. We scrapped the reserve team because we dont have enough players to field one.

So now we have roughly 10 "senior players." The rest of the squad are youth kids from the academy. Chainrai is trying to buy the club(hell make a ton of money off his investment), AA is employed by him already, and Peter Storrie(the CEO during the debt pile up) is being retained as an "advisor."

Yahya Kirdi says Liverpool deal close

LONDON -- A Canadian-based consortium led by a Syrian businessman said Wednesday that it is close to buying Liverpool from the club's American owners.

The statement from Yahya Kirdi, who is representing a group of investors from the Middle East and Canada, came hours before Chinese investor Kenny Huang said he is also contemplating a takeover of the Premier League club.

Dallas businessman Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. put the team up for sale in April amid pressure from banks because of the club's $374 million of debt. Hicks also owns baseball's Texas Rangers, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. The Rangers were scheduled to be sold at auction Wednesday in Texas.

Martin Broughton, who was brought in as chairman to oversee the Liverpool sale process, said he hopes a buyer can be found before the transfer window closes Aug. 31.

Kirdi, who is now a Canadian resident, said his group is in "advanced negotiations" with Hicks and Gillett.

"Agreement has been reached on all major terms including the purchase price, repayment of the existing bank debt from RBS [Royal Bank of Scotland] and Wells Fargo and financing of a new stadium in Liverpool's Stanley Park," Kirdi's group said in a statement. "A formal purchase agreement between the parties is in the final stage of negotiation."

HA HA HA HA.

Better to have no owner than a Canadian one.

Portsmouth lost 2-0 to Coventry City.....CC finished 19th in Championship last year.

We started a player from our Academy as we only have 10 regulars. Suited up 4 other players from the Academy as subs.

It's going to be a fun season.

New intern moved into the house today. When I walked to his room to meet him one of the first things I saw was a Chelsea scarf on his bed. This could get interesting.

I'm still working on getting cable/internet in the house over here but if the church can pay for it (which I think they will), I'm hoping they'll let me pay for the soccer channels. Not being gone for games every Saturday this fall will allow me to watch a lot more.
