Unless you are working in that capacity for the school, I don't think you can know where their priorities truly lie. You can only base it off of what gets the most pub and that doesn't even give you a fraction of what goes on. Just what will sell the most papers/get the most hits.

I gotcha ALA.What you said is very true. Ultimately it's on Caner. Caner's a smart guy, but I hope he just got carried away once, and embellished his story. It happend once and then it just kept happening and he didn't know how to stop. Most of us all did this as kids at some point (and teens, and sometimes even as adults, lol) and eventually we get busted by someone or we just say "Hey, I lied". If he really did make this stuff up to make himself look good, I'm gonna be very disappointed. If he just got carried away and couldn't find a way to stop, I can forgive the guy. It doesn't make it ok, but I can understand it. I'm interested so see what LU and Caner have to say when it's all said and done.

Honestly, when you go to a school for four years, you just kind of figure it out. You find where peoples/companies priorities lie in a very short period of time. And the longer you're there, the more you learn. Unless of course LU is in some deep subterfuge, which would also make a nice story, bigger than Caner's...and which would also be completely untrue.

I agree that the focus should be on the professor, but really, shouldn't someone have done some type of background check just to make sure his story checks out? Giving him that high of a position without at first checking the facts is a little...well, irresponsible and lazy at best.

You may be treading a fine line with that last sentence my friend...

Agree and I think that is where there is room for criticism of LU in this situation. If you are going to head a dept or school within the university I would hope for a thorough check of his academic credentials at the very least.

Maybe I should have put, "...bigger than Caner's, lol. And which would also be completely untrue. " That way the joke would have been clearer than the Snowflex Mountain at night! Thank you, I'll be here all night! ZING!

Does an unintentional misleading of his personal background have anything to do with his academic credentials? I don't believe anyone is questioning the materials he has published...

WIC, Some things you can't joke about...nor can you disguise them as joking either...I cant remember where in scripture it talks about that but there are some things you really shouldnt say and then cover by merely saying "I was only joking"

I was just poking fun at those who actually think that way. If I had made a satirical comment about the healthcare legislation I would have the support of probably over half the posters. But since it was about people who incorrectly think my Alma Matar is the second coming of the Dharama Initiative, that's somehow not ok? If we can't have a little bit of fun with an otherwise sad and disappointing topic, then I'm sorry I missed the memo. Was it a poor joke, absolutely. Was it out of line and sinful, as was possibly insinuated, no.

Hey BJ, thanks for for flushing out and be open to my clarification. That's why I love posting with y'all, even if we don't always agree! We are all LU/Big South family, semi-dysfunctional, but family none the less! :)

I find it funny if not hilarious that "Dr" Godwin, the man who years ago was dismissed from the Moral Majority because he had an ongoing affair with his secretary and divorced this then wife and married his secretary. This is not rumor - this IS a FACT.

Another case of Brother Jerry being weak kneed when it came to firing someone for blantant immoral behavior. Ed Hinson, is another key examples of former employees that Jerry was very benevolent to.

So for "Dr" Godwin to investigate the dishonesty of a man who was head of the Seminary on dishonest credentials seems like the blind leading the blinder.

I could care less about what Godwin has done while a VP - his tract record of being a womanizer should have ousted him OUT of any position of leadership at LU or any Christian school. I am appalled as many others are that this sob has been allowed to rise up an even have power at my alma mater. Something is dead wrong with this! I know many key faculty and members and members of the administration resigned over this issue - people of intergrity whom I greatly respect.

2 Tim. 3 - is pretty clear and LU is a para church ministry and by Jerry and Jerry Jr. not firing him sends a message out loudly and clearly and that some people ARE above the law and if you repent there are no consequences....can you imagine raising children that way.

so how do you really feel?

I still hold on to the fact that this was one time almost 10 years ago. Caner wasnt getting up in campus church talking about his days growing up in al qaeda training camps or anything. I mean it got out there, very unfortunate, and yeah he probably should have just come out and said hey i said this story once and it wasnt true so i stopped telling it, but he instead just stopped telling it. And thats all if the suspicion is true. Thats the worst case scenario.

But im pretty sure if these men did do such egregious sins and you feel they got off scott free, rest assured that if you believe in the same God I do, he knows what has happened in their hearts, and they will get what they deserve, him or hell.

Maybe I am getting off track here...and I am not taking a side either way, but Jerry Senior was a man who believed in second chances. I can think of many, many people who he gave second chances to. This includes students and employees. I will say that many times it backfired on him (such as Godwin), but that was Jerry's nature. i once heard him say that we we worshiped a god of second chances who used broken men to do great things. (ex: David, Moses) Jerry wasn't very vindictive. I would say 50% of the time it was a bad decision and 50% of the time it worked out. A .500 average in baseball is awesome, but in a ministry such as this looks really bad. But I loved the man.

All one can hope is that "someone" will step up and make sure that LU's administration is made up of leaders who excel in character and academic standing. Until that time, we'll have to deal with such backwards incidents, as mentioned above, and we'll see continued weakening of our on-campus education.

do you get on here to do anything else but trash LU?

Did you ever spend anytime with Jerry Falwell?? If you have then that should be answer enough..he was big on forgiveness..something I think the media often overlooked..he was so caring and forgiving he was always willing to give someone a second chance that showed truly that they had turned around...how dare you question he motives behind your little keyboard..I find that incredibly appalling...

if you came on here to do anything but bash on LU then maybe I would've let it slide without saying anything, but its so ridiculous to me that you only show up to trash on your former school...and now you are trashing on the founder who is no longer alive to defend himself...classy

I was 100% sure this post was about Gary Aldridge. 100%.

If all this happened while Caner was an employee here, I'd feel different about the situation.
