Has anybody ever heard of this?

http://www.geocaching.com/

Looks like it's a lot of fun. You use your phone or GPS device to find the location of caches, which I think are just a box with a logbook inside and possibly some items you can take (if you replace it with something else). There's a ton of caches around the Lynchburg area and even some that are a "mystery". I think you find those by finding a couple of others and put the clues together.

Yes, I really wanted to get into it about four years ago. (I think. Maybe longer.)

It really does look fun and I know a lot of families that are into it as a family hobby. If you venture out, let me know what you think. I might try some of the easier ones with my son. This is the first time I've thought about it in a long while.

We were actually throwing out ideas for LU's 30 year anny coming up soon and this was an idea to implement....no idea yet if thats one of the things that will be done but it was talked about. Very interesting I will say, however I was confused because I've only heard that term in reference to putting your location with other data (pictures, tweets, etc)

We did it a little bit in the parks around our house. The kids enjoy it every now & then. But McDonalds Happy Meal trinkets don't really inspire a great deal of zeal.

Be prepared to look up a lot and look under park benches.

We've done some geocaching with our Youth Group and it's proven to be a lot of fun. Send two groups out in the same park and challenge them to come back with the "prize" first.

We did open one box and there were several emptied shotgun shells. You never know what you're going to find.

I went out in search of 4 different caches this morning and only wound up finding 1. It was pretty neat. In one spot where I didn't find it, I found a 20 dollar bill. Completely unrelated but made the experience of going 1 for 4 a lot better. I can't help but wonder if I'm going to get in trouble looking for them. Like I'm pretty sure one I didn't find is in a lamp post in a parking lot. I didn't want to stick my arm in there as there were tons of wires all over the place.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were in a lightpost.

Geocaching is nearly always on public property for a reason.
