Stephen Berry aimed high for his return to NASCAR racing.
The Huddleston native and Liberty University student hasn’t raced competitively in more than nine months, but he has entered his name in a Late Model Stock event that will include some of NASCAR’s best.
The 21-year old was invited to compete in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown on Thursday at Southside Speedway in Midlothian. His challengers in the event will include NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick and Bobby Labonte.

MIDLOTHIAN -- Local racer and Liberty University student Stephen Berry drove the Liberty University Chevy Impala Late Model Stock Car to a ninth place finish in the third annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown last Thursday at Southside Speedway.
Berry avoided having to run the last- chance heat race by qualifying 13th out of the 38 drivers who attempted to make the field.
The top 20 qualifiers were assured a starting spot, while the other drivers had to race the 30 lap last-chance race to fill the final 10 spots in the 30 car field.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers who competed were Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Curtis Markham, Kevin Harvick, Elliott Sadler, Marcos Ambrose, and Aric Almirola.
Proceeds of this event benefit the Denny Hamlin Foundation, which primarily raises awareness and funding for the specific needs of individuals afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis and also supports chronically ill children with other debilitating illnesses.
Berry had to avoid multiple wrecks in the 250- lap feature.
Berry qualified better than many of the Cup drivers and finished the race ahead of series regulars Busch, Logano, Sadler, Harvick, Labonte, and Almirola and veteran driver Curtis Markham.
Berry's next race will be May 22 Langley Speedway in Hampton.

Racing is incredibly expensive, often snuffing out talented drivers who don't come from wealthy families - Stephen's dad (Bill Berry) came up with a creative and interesting idea to build a documentary that captures Stephen's struggle and progression as he seeks to catch the eye of a NASCAR team. Now they need our support!

Liberty produced a great promo video. Check out the links to kickstarter and to the youtube video:

Kickstarter site (through Kickstarter you can lend support to his efforts for as little as $10 and you only pay if he raises the $110,000 needed to produce the documentary); Stephen's info can be found by going to kickstarter.com and searching "Stephen Berry" or use the link below:
