Yes. The ends, the situation, the past, all justify the means. Normally when you throw out a cliche like that, the means are questionable. I see nothing wrong with the means here.

I think this just gives the city a reason to block future requests from LU. Now that the school played their hand this way, the city doesn't even have to keep up the pretense that they are going to help the school out.

The elections coming up will determine that Adam.

But LU just pushed all in AND showed their hand pre-flop...they're essentially betting on the river card (winning the local elections) to bail them out...and if the LU students don't turn out (and many won't because they feel like they're being used, no matter how great LU's cause is), then Liberty will have a REALLY hard time getting anything done, unless they can find the votes somewhere off of Liberty Mountain. I guarantee every LU hater and everyone else who thinks LU is trying to hijack a local election simply to push through the University's own agenda is going to show up at the polls...and if it rains on election day every TRBC person of age and LU student won't be going to the polls. It's going to be hard enough to convince students that a local election in a place that is not "hometown" is just as important as a national election. The lesson is NEVER SHOW YOUR HAND, never give up your bargaining chip, and never give up the most important thing...leverage!

those retarded hillbillies who hate liberty won't show up either if its raining.

You can say that about 90% of what Mallet posts.

Rubber Mallet, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this world...still trying to figure out how to "chain" my posts/responses to other people, oh well, I'll drudge through the vague FAQ's again to try to figure it out  Good point about the LU hater voters though, I suppose it does work both ways.

Guys, I am sure Jesus got some bad press when he drove the moneychangers out of the temple in anger. I am sure the patriots who fought for independence in 1776 got some bad press in King George's England--they were probably called terrorists and their actions were probably called un-Christian. Well, I am willing to take some bad press to expose lies. Just this week, in the News Advance, deceitful letters from Tom Gerdy and John Lawrence have been published. The News Advance even apologized on the editorial page today for the lies in Lawrence's letter and for publishing the letter. A few weeks ago John Lawrence told a Democratic forum that I had stated I wanted LU students to be exempt from paying meals taxes. Given the deceit from Joan Foster's supporters, my staff would have been imprudent not to tape the meeting. And, if the Mayor and City Manager had not denied their statements, Bill McRorie and Lee Beaumont never would have released the tape. No legal, ethical or Christian principles were violated by secretly taping this conversation. I have been secretly taped on at least two occasions (once by the FBI) and, because I told the truth, the taping benefitted LU's position. Because taping conversations is legal in Virginia, I assume that every telephone conversation I have and every meeting I attend is taped. The Biblical way to live your life is to not say anything in secret that you are not willing to have shouted from the mountaintops. It is my responsibility to defend and protect LU and I will use every legal and ethical tool at my disposal to do so. If some are too blind to see the difference between lying and using accepted methods to expose lies, then so be it.

As a former journalist who employed some of the same techniques (which brings up the point of those in the media who are crying wolf while having their own history of recording conversations) I stand behind the chancellor's position.

And as an attorney, I am sure he is well versed in using the taping as a method to distract from the actual malfeasance.

I love the honesty in that post. It's not common for companies or universities to admit making a move that may cause some bad PR for the short term in order to secure the long term goals. To be honest I dont believe LU did receive to much bad PR other than titles of "LU secretly records meeting with Mayor" instead of "Mayor lied to LU and caught on tape" but I dont expect much else from the N&A.

I truly dont think the city is up in arms over this and heres an example:

I had dinner with some people that are very liberal and I would consider them neutral on LU and that is only because of my connection with LU and their relationship with me...over the years I have been able to inform them of all the great things going on at LU rather than only what is reported. Anyways, all that to say this, while still not being close to the idea of LU can do no wrong, they saw nothing wrong with the recording. They saw a bigger issue with the lies that were exposed and believe its reasons like the now public lies that have caused a poor relationship in the past with the city as nobody believes this was the first time this has happened. Hopefully it is the last though and honesty will come from this so LU and the City both fully understand the concerns and ways to alleviate those concerns without being told "it's great and you have our full support" when that's not the case.
