Boise State has its infamous "Smurf Turf," and Nebraska has what it likes to call the "Sea of Red" to describe the vast crowd inside Lincoln's Memorial Stadium. As of next fall, though, neither of them will have anything on I-AA Eastern Washington, which announced plans Wednesday to install an actual field of red.

Hate the idea (and not a fan of the Smurf turf, either).
If it's not real grass, at least let it be the same color as grass.

horrible. You'll be seeing spots for hours after watching a game on this crap.

then again, they have a chicken-hawk made of letters as a logo. Whadya expect.

If I were a player on that team, I'd demand a shaded visor for my helmet, their eyes are gonna be shot after four years of playing/practicing on that stuff.

I thought the NCAA made a rule about the turf color a few years ago, and that BSU's was grandfathered in.

And Eastern has had such severe financial problems that they considered dropping football at one point. Where is the school getting the money for this kind of turf? I think they had a grass field there last time I was up in Cheney. The stadium is a total dump too, unless it's been drastically improved in the last five years.

The article answers the questions raised here.

1) There is no NCAA rule about the color of a football field.

2) Michael Roos, an NFL player and EWU alum is donating a half a mil toward the field, with the rest to be raised from other private doners.

The more I think about it, it's a conversation starter which could bring attention to their program they might not otherwise get. Boise State has certainly done a lot of other things right to get where they are, but don't fool yourself, the smurf turf didn't hurt.

There are very few rules regarding the playing colors of any surface. VT has maroon and orange tennis courts, and we just recently had red and blue tennis courts put in.

I remember reading on AGS a while back they were trying to do this and alot of people said the same stuff, that it would fade.

And as far as Money for facilities, up until a few years ago, if I recall, the seahawks did training at EWU.

ex-squeeze me, but do we not have red turf in our end zones? I sure hope they don't fade.

Exactly. I have not seen the colored endzones fading.

I'd imagine there is a great deal more wear, proportionally (is that a word?), in the middle of the field and from the 20 to the 20 than there is in the endzones though

Over the next couple of years, our offense might make it difficult to prove that statement.

Watching that video and seeing the red field hurts my eyes.

I was going to say that Red was the worst possible color to do this with but that's simply true for television purposes and I doubt that's a problem for them.
