A student group is forming on Facebook who's mission it is to boycott home hockey games until the price of admission for students is $0. Their theory is that hockey isn't one of Dr. Falwell's favorite sports, and therefore it doesn't get funding. And I quote:

Our dear university is still refusing to promote the hockey team from a club team to a regular sports team. Because of that, students have to pay to use our own ice center.

My hypothesis is that the university funds Dr. Falwell's favorite sports, and ones that look good on brochures. I don't know what good boycotting will do, exactly, but I am tired of shelling out the cash (even if it's only $4) when LU has plenty.

If Dr. Falwell could claim a whole mountain for the university, surely he can claim a hockey team.

It's not that watching the game isn't worth $4, it's just that our hockey team deserves the respect, recognition and financial support of Liberty University.

Whoever is doing this is an idiot. It's not the fact that they don't want to move up, you have to look at it logistically. I'm sure a boycott and getting less attendance will make them think they can fund the move up.

Let them charge an extra hundred bucks to your activity fee and then games will be free.

Yes, you pay for hockey, because it's a club sport. [as far as I know] Liberty doesn't get $ for away games in hockey...the only people you are hurting is the hockey program by not comming.

#2. Yes, you pay to skate...because it costs $ to keep the ice frozen and dehumidifiers running to keep the building from turning into a dense fog...

#3. Unlike Basketball, there is limited seating for hockey - you can barely stand in there and see anything it's so crowded. Not everyone will be able to go to all the games that they want. At least paying will allow those who REALLY want to go to be there to go.

The only thing a boycott does is hurt the hockey program.

The only thing I'm upset about is the lack of seats in the rink...can anyone confirm how many seats are availabile now, and where they are (or pictures?) That would be great.

This guys a joke and should stop speaking in public. Are you serious? You think it's Dr. Falwell's decision to charge for games. If it was up to him - every event at Liberty would e free. It's about running a business - and believe me - Liberty is a business. It's about supporting a program on it's own and not taking away academic money to support extra curricular activities. It's not an NCAA sport, and students do pay for Football and Basketball too. It's called an activity fee and you know what - most students would be upset if it got increase to include Hockey. It's $4!!!! Don't use the excuse- "I too broke" I was a college student who paid his own way and I still went to games. Stop drinking coffee or eating out every meal. It's $4, It's 2 moves at Movies 10. That money goes towards supporting a program that is very expensive to run.

If it was up to Jerry, there'd be no curfew, no dress code, everything would be free, there'd be concerts every weekend, and he'd have a ton of stuff for the students to do. However, Jerry knows that money is a huge issue.

These idiots probably know nothing about Title IX and the funding it takes to fund scholarships.

so dumb....and the reason why we have to pay to use the rink is nobody in this area knows how to run an ice rink so they had to bring in a private company which costs some money, and instead of raising our acitivity fee even more they decided this was a better way to do things. That way those people that don't want to use the ice rink don't pay for something they don't use.

The hockey thing will come in time. I am pretty sure Jerry is pretty excited about the hockey team....dumb kids on facebook

$4 for a hockey game...that is a great deal...some kids who grew up in the youth group bubble culture can have rocks for brains sometimes...this is a prime example of the saccarine christian puff version of youthful hubris reaching to fight the man and the establishment on something, anything...(she should focus her efforts on something of merit, like a discourse on America's energy woes, loss of privacy and freedoms, etc.)

I would love something to be $4 for anything: a concert, AAA Baseball game, Hockey game, College Basketball, College Football (W&M home football games are $23 for the stands on the side and $17 for endzone seats), even a movie is $8...any 90's people here, good thing she doesn't have to pay $5 for gas, $5 for a ticket, and a road trip to the star city (plus the $500 deductible you have to pay when some idiot rear ends you outside the Roanoke Ice Center...oh wait, guess that last part isn't standard fare, but I digress.)

I understand having to payout on top of an activity fee isn't necessarily fun, but times are ch-ch-ch-changing, with 25,000 on campus in the future, supply and demand will create a value for the courtside/rinkside/fieldside tickets (as long as LU doesn't get too brash and use it to exploit the students.) She should have been there in 00 when the seniors got to pay out on top of the regular fees an extra additional technology upgrade fee of $250 for wiring and equipment that wouldn't be available until the fall after they graduated. This concludes my only, "in my day we had to walk to school uphill both ways in the snow covered with red clay..."

What's funny to me is that this group has been going since at least January and they only have 5 members and a total of 5 posts. We've talked more about it here than they've been able to drum up in nearly a year. It's rediculous.

At least this gives the Hockey thread some attention.

Money is always an issue. Last year, my son paid around $1200 to play for Long Beach (also D-2 ACHA), plus they paid for their own rooms on road trips, plus their parents got to pay to go and watch them play (after they had paid for their tuition, dues, equipment, and rooms & meals on the road.) They're used to it, since playing hockey costs a lot of money from youth hockey up. I wish it weren't that way. In high school (Maine) the school payed for everything: equipment, ice time, sticks, etc.
I would like to see the college do what they can to make things easily accessible (such as the season ticket) but it's also a reality that everything costs. It's so great that we have our own ice - and I haven't seen it, but intend to in the spring. I hope there is seating for a thousand... if not, make some somehow - immediately!

they would get killed right now, I think people get fooled into thinking we would dominate NCAA D1 like we do ACHA D1, but the level of play is so much better, I use to live in Maine and went to some UMaine hockey games and let me tell you UMaine hockey is at such a higher level then LU its not even funny....not to take anything away from the program, it continues to improve every year, we just aren't ready for the move up to the NCAA Division I
