Looking at his stats, he seems to be more of a slasher than a pure shooter. His 3-point numbers aren't great, but he's averaging over 20 points a game and has scored 25 or more in 5 of his 12 games. He seems to get to the basket and get fouled quite a bit.

There's a pictorial that has back story on how he made the transition from football prospect to hoops prodigy after a neck injury a few years ago playing Pop Warner football ..

Here's a recent mention about Jernell from his local fishwrap ...

The Indians boys team might be just 2-5 on the season, but that hasn't stopped guard Jernell Hughes from lighting up the scoreboard on a nightly basis.

Hughes, a junior, is averaging 24.5 points a game. In fact, Hughes' scoring average leads all Class 4A players and is 10th overall among all classes in Florida.

Now just imagine what those numbers would be if Hughes could hit his free throws. The 6-foot-1 team captain is shooting a paltry 48 percent from the charity stripe, hitting on 31 of 64 attempts.

By my count that puts us at 15 scholarship players that we have for 2011-12. 7 of those 15 play either the 1 or the 2.

We will be bigger next year than we were this year with the addition of JVP and Baird alone. Obviously, we won't have 15 players on scholarship. If the guys who have verballed come, that means others will go, and I don't think any of the likely candidates are big men.

I think part of manson's point is that we are not just full for 2011-12, we are 2 over. We don't have any scholarship Juniors on the roster this year, so unless there is attrition, we would not have a schollie for these 2011 commits.

If we were to sign Bowen this Spring, we would be one over for 10-11 and 3 over for 11-12.

I am sure there will be some turnover. I think we can already see who might be transfer candidates by the way playing time is shaping up. I am excited about the caliber of these recruits. We seem to be upgrading talent. Size is nice but you can win a lot of games playing "small ball" as long as they have talent. Layer is proving he can recruit. In a year or two we will be able to judge if he can coach them up. The future is looking good.

You read my mind ALAFlamesFan. Speculating on possible transfers seems to be one of the topics "discouraged" here, but it doesn't take long to look at the box scores and see who is not figuring into the plans.

Does anyone have any new information on Mr. Hughes? I am curious why he didn't sign in the early period. He verballed early in the process and usually those guys commit early too. Are we still interested in him? Not much new on the web that I can find...

I am chilled. It was just curious that the early signing came and went with not even a post on this thread. Nothing since January. Not the normal deal on FF where we over analyze everything, LOL. The other thread on 2012 recruits got me thinking about him...

Also not sure losing this commit would equal bad news...fwiw
