I wouldn't say parallel -- king isn't comparing the coaches, he's comparing the delusional fan base(s)... And while WU/Realist is a microcosm of UCLA, I think it is valid.

I will go ahead and clarify...I didn't mean Winthrop's Big South Championships were flukes. I was referring to some of their out of conference games. Because, let's face it, if Winthrop has any real notoriety, it's from those few games, not from winning the Big South often. The point was, winning the Big South is great, but it doesn't mean much of anything to anyone outside of the Big South.

This is interesting... which out of conference games would you call a fluke? Were they flukes because it was Winthrop or are all "mid-major" wins over "high-majors" a fluke?

As for what gave Winthrop notoriety, I would say it's both winning the Big South and winning some big out of conference games. Most of the notable out of conference wins came when most people were still talking about college football (so the average fan didn't notice). I would say the average person knows about Winthrop from filling out their NCAA brackets (which Winthrop was on... because they won the Big South). Of course, more people talked about them around that time because of their out of conference wins...

I think the word "fluke" is a poor choice for those wins WU had over higher profile schools. WU won them because they were good, and in a couple of cases may have been taken lightly. Perhaps "isolated" wins would be more appropriate, because even in those "glory days" the Eagles took plenty of whoopins from the ACC, Big East, etc., just like the rest of the BSC. The difference is they won some too.

UNCA is a nice little diploma mill for undergraduates in North Carolina who like to smoke copious amounts of marijuana while debating cubism vs. impressionism. Winthrop is a full fledged university that offers graduate programs, but have fun pretending you attended a decent academic institution. However, I'll cut you a break since the haze and smell of funyons may have distorted your long term critical thinking abilities.


And by the way Cider, it would be in your best interest to display just a modicum of common sense when talking trash. The eagles have won 6 of the last 7, 12 of the last 16 against the flamers, that's not even competitive, but keep wanting to play the eagles for christmas if you like annual spankings with your lump of coal.

From the looks of things App state has a decent squad this year, but they are far from a powerhouse. They took Arkansas to overtime before losing, but also had to go to OT to beat Morgan State.

(This is not in defense of WU's result last night)...Morgan State has a pretty good program. They beat Maryland last year and made the NCAAs...they've already beat Arkansas this year and lost to Louisville by single digits. Probably one of the strongest MEAC teams since Hampton had that run of success a few years ago.

We're shooting 41.3 % from the field > 36.4%
We're shooting 27.1% from 3 > 16.7%

And we've done it against tougher competiton. Our SOS is 134, WU's is 325
