prototype wrote:Guys - they have already named a coach replacement. This was announced at least 3 weeks ago. Groh is to work the rest of the season and then the transition will begin. Groh has agreed to work him through the recruiting process and booster approach. I'm not sure if I agree with the decision, but it's better for us than giving up Rocco, but only time will tell. It's our one and only BJ Williams. Just heard Presbyterian reach a deal last year with UVA not to extend an offer knowing this might happen. PSU will receive Sewell in return. Good Luck BJ!!!
+1 for proto :D

and I doubt Danny is going anywhere until after LU gets at least a playoff spot. McKay had a history of leaving teams in the lurch. DR? not so much.

ACC Sports Journal wrote:UVa Insider: Groh Departure Seems Certain

CHARLOTTESVILLE — With a back-loaded schedule that includes Clemson and Virginia Tech in the final two weeks, Virginia might have surmised that a successful season would hinge on the middle part of its slate.
And here is where Coach Rocco comes into discussion ...
The funny thing about Virginia’s top prospects is that many of them have ties to Groh. Al Golden, whose Temple team won eight straight games to reach 8-2 in mid-November, was Groh’s first defensive coordinator at Virginia. (Temple had been one of the worst programs in America for decades.) Danny Rocco, who has built Liberty into a perennial Big South contender, was Groh’s associate head coach.
and even Chad Wilt ...
Remarkably, Virginia has a core of good young assistants and recruiters. They include secondary coach Anthony Poindexter, running backs coach Wayne Lineburg, receivers coach Latrell Scott and d-line coach Chad Wilt. However, what kind of message would it send to keep multiple coaches from a staff that has experienced three losing seasons in the past four?

I love Chad. Absolutely love him. However, if people are putting his name in for head coach then they really don't know what they're talking about. He'll likely get there one day but I don't think that day is within the next month.

They weren't mentioning Chad for head coach, just saying he as among a group of sharp young assistants that Groh had assembled.

And smoothie, I'm just serving up what is already public. Not trying to stir any pots but I do enjoy the discussions. I'm thrilled we have a coach who is so talented that others think of his name as a candidate for BCS programs.

Al Groh Fired- Who Replaces Him?

The 2009 football season has been a disaster for the Virginia Cavaliers. For that matter the majority of the Al Groh era in Charlottesville has been a train wreck. As a result it is unlikely that Al Groh will retain his job during the off season. That's right, Al Groh will be fired.
Danny is among 5 likely candidates according to this guy ...
Danny Rocco: You probably don't know who Danny Rocco is, but you should. He is the head coach of the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg Virginia. In three years Rocco has taken a 1-10 program and turned them into a contender in the Bowl Sub Division. He is a brash young coach who runs a dynamic offense and he is not afraid to mix things up. He has some past experience on the UVA staff. There is no doubt that Danny Rocco is on his way up the coaching ladder, but making this jump right away may be too much too soon.

When did Liberty become a competitor in the Bowl Sub Division? And what exactly is a Bowl Sub Division. Something about submarines, or is it sandwiches?

A Chucktown fishwrap is now joining the Rocco to UVa bandwagon ...
postandcourier.com wrote:Trav's take

--Assuming the demise of Al Groh has not been greatly exaggerated, who should replace him at Virginia? While successful non-BCS coaches like Boise State's Chris Peterson will be popular picks -- and pricey -- might we recommend a cheaper in-state option: Liberty's Danny Rocco. Taking over a 1-10 Liberty team in 2005, Rocco has led the Flames to at least nine wins in the last three seasons, becoming a model FCS program. And a couple former FCS coaches have done well for themselves in the FBS: See Ohio State's Jim Tressel and Georgia Tech's Johnson.

Guess who is the leading candidate to replace Al Groh?

According to this morning's fishwrap, it's CHRIS PETERSON out of Boise State. Sounds like he'll be trading in the Smurf turf for double his salary in C-ville (article is hard copy only; nothing online about it).

I would be VERY surprised if Peterson decided Charlottesville would be the place he would move after turning down opportunities at much better places the past couple of years.

Nice find, FC. That's the same article that appeared in the Lynchburg paper. What's interesting is to read the 14 comments about the article--some from Boise fans and others from UVa fans. Their Internet fighting over this almost rivals what we had in the other thread between the UNCA fan and the Winthrop fan: http://www2.dailyprogress.com/cdp/Sport ... 49342/P10/

Smoothy is our resident UVa expert: somebody page him to see what his thoughts on this coaching speculation.

I definitely think Peterson is a great fit for UVA, simply because it means Rocco doesn't have to leave. He's such a great coach, I might cry a little if he left us...

this is nothing more than speculation. UVA Assoc AD Jon Oliver is a Boise Grad and was rumored to be at a boise football game which he was but it was for a basketball reunion. Chris Petersen is having a hard time getting more money for his assistants, and that may frustrate him, but not enough to leave. His only other east coast gig as an assistant, he wanted to be out west. who knows he may want a challenge of coaching in a BCS conference, and the ACC is not the best conference out there at this point and UVA has never been that far from turning the corner though the last few years of the Groh era have been dreadful.you could win in the ACC quicker than most of the other BCS Conferences.UVA is a good coaching gig. great academic school, quality facilities, and fans that want a winner. i think AL Golden from Temple, Mike London from Richmond, and Tommy Tuberville are the names i hear a lot. but who knows. This is AD Craig Littlepage's biggest hire, so he has to hit a home run. The fact that Golden, London, and Rocco are Groh Guys though all have different styles from him, may make those guys not good candidates. it will be interesting for sure, but in the end Coach Rocco is not going to UVA IMO.

Liberty losing to Stony Brook was the best thing that could have happened for Flames fans in regards to this. Rocco will not be a serious candidate for this job. He might get a phone call or an interview, but I don't think he'll be at the top of the short list.
