I guess this means we're ranked 54th in the country

CCU's fans are less than impressed- well, one of them, anyway: http://www.anygivensaturday.com/forum/s ... hp?t=13173

at any rate, its quite a step up. I hope it continues!

Wow. If you're counting, Coastal dropped 20 spots to #45. I also notice that we received more votes than Maine, which is a quality I-AA program, and only 2 less than Towson.

Agreed, SMOOTHIE.

But I'm impressed with how much respect we were shown nonetheless- and wondering who comprises the voter block for this poll. We certainly have great potential this year- possibly that was taken into consideration?

I know there are a lot of sports information directors on that poll board. The SID at Northern Arizona used to vote. Todd Wetmore at Liberty might vote as well; I'll ask him today. I think there are some media mixed in as well.

I can't stand coastal. They've quickly developed some kind of elitest mentality. They pretend like they belong with the big boys when in reality, they've just been better than the BSC for the last couple of years. I'm impressed with what they've done so quickly but, please, get over yourselves. I can't wait to handle them this year.

The votes weren't from me. I voted for College of Charleston, Winthrop, and ETSU.

You have to start somewhere and beating the teams that you are supposed to beat is a good starting point.

I was a bit mystified to that see we garnered less votes than last week, even after a win- until I noticed that CCU recieved less as well, even after a good come-from-behind win against a DI opponent.

Towson the big mover here- going from 9 votes last week to 66 this week.

You have to understand that the voting system is flawed because you have no idea how people are voting. You could have a writer (Chris????) rate CCU as the #15 school in the nation and LU #18, and you'd get the same results. It's like when we beat GWU those years ago and we were rated in the coaches poll and we were happy, until we realized that there was a coach in the Big South that would cast a top 25 vote for whoever was leading the Big South at the time.

That being said, it's certainly a welcome change to have a discussion like this... Congrats on the two wins, fellas. Let's hope you can keep it up (and I'll be watching in the stands at Towson to make sure you do).

When we beat Towson, we will definitely garner some nice votes, maybe sneak in. I doubt we do, but we will but on the edge of the top 25.

Even with a win this week, I seriously doubt we crack the top 25. Bear in mind that this would be a good win for our program but, as far as the rest of I-AA is concerned, Towson showed some nice things last year and finished over .500 but they're still considered an A-10 also-ran. They've got a few things to prove themselves. Liberty hasn't beaten a I-AA opponent in nearly 2 full years so it would be foolish to expect the polls to suddenly embrace us.

I remember when the Lady Flames basketball team was on the verge of cracking the top 25... We had slowly climbed the ranks for weeks and weeks until we were team #26. And then, something like the #22nd ranked team and the #25th ranked team lost that week. And sure enough, when the new polls came out, we were... #26.

It takes time (which was the point behind my last post) so every voter starts taking notice, not just the locals who are pumping up a team.

I remember when the womens basketball was in the top 25 (the year Katie F was a sophomore) and all we got was a 13th seed in the tourney. That really ticked me off. I expected at least a 9 or 10.

Agreed. If I am not mistaken we beat Towson many many years ago when that little scat back that went on to play in the NFL with the NY Giants was there. (Dave Maggert...?) We have also played and beaten many better teams that are now D1 schools. As good as the start to the Rocco era has been, we don't need to get too over confident because we beat a couple of DII schools. The true test is how the students and community react to our first loss(es). We will then get an idea of how stong this fan base is.

Its funny you should mention that name, flameshaw. Dave Maggard is the AD at Houston and I just saw him at lunch. Meggett was a gamebreaker during the Parcells/Simms golden years for the Giants.
