I know we are supposed to take them "one game at a time," but I was wondering if there has been any talk about the possibility of taking a busload of fans to the Stony Brook game? It would be a great outing for the LU students, fans, and/or Flames Club members.

Not happening. Liberty people do not respond to bus trips. I don't know why they don't but they don't. We have tried multiple times in the past to do bus trips and the response has been terrible.

Okay, if we can get 35 people to commit, I know a guy at my Church who has a bus company out of roanoke. I can see how much they would charge us.

I'm one. We need at least 34 more.

That was tried for the West Virginia game and didn't work at all.

Might want to wait through this weekend. A potential loss at GW would make that long ride to Long Island a waste of a road trip.

Really shouldn't be that hard at all to fill up a bus. All that needs to be done is getting the word out. Facebook,Twitter, etc. I'm thinking of driving myself up. I live in NW Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley, so it wouldn't make too much sense to drive 2.5 hours south to catch a bus heading north. Who has the resources to get the word out on Facebook and Twitter? May even want to post some fliers around campus. I think with a little bit of advertising, even SJ will be surprised what can get done. There would be little to no cost of advertising if using Facebook and Twitter.

Resources aren't the problem. It's when you start realizing that the price is going to be around $40-50 per person and that doesn't include food that'll be the problem. People will see that if they're gonna drop that much money, they might as well drive with their friends and be comfortable than on a bus.

Let's assume you can get a charter bus for $2050. That's on the low side since the trip is over 500 miles and will likely be charged by the mile. The trip is roughly 1025 miles. If, and this is a big if, you can get the price at $2/mile, you're looking at around $2050.

Let's also assume that tickets are $10 for the game.

Most buses hold 50 people so let's assume you fill the bus up completely.

At this point, you're talking $41 for the bus, plus $10 for a ticket, and people are at $51 already, without food.

Now, conversely, let's look at it if you drove with some friends.

Let's assume you can fit four people in a car and that car gets 300 miles to the tank. With the trip being 1025 miles, you're looking at 3.5 tanks of gas, so let's round up to four tanks. Let's say it's $35 to fill up the tank. That comes out to a total of $140 in gas. Split four ways, that's $35.

Let's also assume that tickets are $10 for the game.

You're looking at $45 for the trip, plus food.

I went on the low side for the bus trip and on the high side for the car trip. You tell me which one is cheaper?

Old alumni (Smoothy) and faculty (me) probably don't want to drive through NYC traffic to get to Long Island. I'd drop half a C-note in a heartbeat for a bus trip to Stony Brook.

And I bet dozens of Flames Club members would do the same.

Yeah, in the same way that you do when you tell your kids something that you know and have experienced and they don't listen, try to do it on their own, and you end up being right.

I'm not discouraging them. I'm telling them it doesn't work at Liberty and that they would come out better if they got in a car and drove with some friends.

When things don't work one time, ok, let's try it again.

When things don't work five or six times in a row, then you start to realize that they're not going to.

If someone wants to try then more power to you, but you're not going to get the 50 people needed to make it cost effective in a week. You would be better off looking for 3-4 people to load up in the car with who will be willing to make the trip with you. You would be better off finding a friend in the Maryland/Delaware/Jersey area to possible crash at the night before. The students that live in those areas should definitely go to that game since they'll be home already. If other students wanted to travel to the game, I'm sure they could find a place to stay. It'll likely be the easiest trip of the year to find some place to stay for free.

You don't plan a 22 hour trip with 50 people in a week by word of mouth and no way of getting a deposit for the whole thing.

Does anyone remember when JB first tried out his tailgating idea? It was basically him and his wife on the corner with a small grill, and that was it. But, now, 3 years later, look how many people tailgate for our home games!

It just takes time to build. And if a bus trip to NYC to see our playoff hopeful team win their last game of the season doesn't get people excited, I don't know what would.

Maybe start small with a rented 12- or 15-passenger van?
