Student voting
The Virginia State Board of Elections recently adopted a new policy that permits college students to vote in the locality where they attend college. Although it is now legal for students to vote, many Lynchburg citizens believe that it is not morally right for the Falwell Machine to send thousands of uninformed students to the polls to support the Falwells’ political interests...

yes, uninformed... they must not have read the issue of the Champion that came out today at LU...lol half the paper was on the election.

and on related news, Bert Dodson, one of the Gang of 4 running City Council, won't be going for re-election this year. (not that he would've gotten it) Here's hoping Foster decides against running again as well.

I actually agree with that in a way. Most students are uninformed in local politics, and no one reads the Champion.

And for the most part, the voters from Liberty will vote the way the University wants, even if they never tell them to. It's a smart move by LU to have more of a say in the way things work in Lynchburg.

Actually, the students are just about as informed as the general public, so it's kind of a wash in the "knowledgable voter" argument.
The only people who don't like this are those who have philosophical problems with LU. People complain about the lack of civic participation in this country, both in voting and community service. Well, LU encourages both, and has been very successful at it.

The College Republicans have done a pretty good job about getting kids aware of whats going on for the election. I know they will be going non-stop until election day. IMO the only questions re: the races are A. How much will Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli win by and B. will Scott Garrett win his Delegate race.

Students will play a much bigger role in B than in A, and in doing so will set up C - how the at large city council elections go in May.

Hmmm...the city sure wants the money LU students spend, but vote here....no way! I love the way LU stands for conservative values and is not ashamed to ask the students to vote, and most likely for conservative values. Thanks LU students for putting Dr. Garrett over the top!

Garrett beats Valentine by only 210 votes & the local paper says that LU voters contributed to the victory:

LU is the hammer, Lynchburg is the nail. The people of the city should wake up and deal with this or get used to the pounding.

Interestingly enough though, the LU turnout was much lower than many had thought it would be. If you read the article, Caleb Mast only counted about 800 LU students. Also, that is a precinct that is typically very much republican (Jeff Helgeson is their council representative and he wins easily there). i heard it reported that 1800 students voted yesterday, but the numbers dont seem to reflect that. this changes the city council race, but not as much as was to be expected.
