Droid Targets iPhone
Details are slipping out about Verizon's Android smartphone.

Verizon Wireless, which recently announced it was hopping on the Android smartphone OS bandwagon big time, has started whetting our appetite for verizon droid It's launched a TV ad for the phone, the Droid, and a teaser site. And so far, it's mostly promoting the phone by bashing the iPhone, with pseudo-Apple text pointing out that "iDont" have a physical keyboard, (third-party) multitasking, a five-megapixel camera, much in the way of customization options, widgets, "open development," the ability to take photos in the dark, or a removable battery. The Droid (whose name is licensed from Mr. Lucas) presumably has all of the above.

My BB 8830 is on its last legs and I am trying to hold out to see if the Droid or a WiFi-enabled Tour is my next phone. Of course if you guys seem to think that the Storm is finally working out its bugs then I might be inclined to consider the Storm2 that drops nationwide at Verizon tomorrow.

Am I that transparent?

All my friends with the Pre have urged me to either stay with BlackBerry or go with Droid. I messed around a bit with the Pre and simply wasn't crazy about it. I like the Tour .. a lot. But wifi is a big deal for me since I appear to be back to my travelling life as a consultant in the next few months or longer (which is also why I won't be switching to AT&T for the iPhone).

I wanted nothing but the Pre for months. I couldn't wait until it came out so I bought my Blackberry. I've gotten to play with the Pre some since, and I'm actually glad I didn't wait.

I like the looks of the Droid Eris a little better than the Motorola offering, but I seriously doubt I'll be able to afford it, even if I was inclined to move to Verizon (I'm one of the few Sprint customers that is actually happy with their service, I think). My next phone will probably be a new Blackberry (maybe the Tour, I'll have to see - I have six more months to decide).

Wake me up when cell phones are washing my dishes and clothes. Until then I will use my laptop as a laptop and my cell phone as a phone. The more crap they put into it is the more crap to break and no one wants to be stuck on the side of the high way with a broke phone. I've been there and done that. If the interface is solid (and I wasn't under contract), I'd actually consider this phone. It has equal (and sometimes better) hardware than the iPhone and a much better network to run it on. If Google gets v.2.0 of Android right, I think this is the new phone to beat.

From everything I've seen, Motorola got the hardware exactly right. It's just a question of Android 2.0. I'll be stopping by a Verizon store to check one out.

They took a page out of Apple's playbook too...keep everything a big secret to create demand and then drop some good commercials to make everyone wonder what it is.


I too am a very happy Sprint customer who loves their Tour but if it makes its way over to sprint I'd give it a shot.

I just read they are offering free turn by turn/navigation software that the IPhone charges $100 for.....sent Garmin shares plummeting as well.

Yep, Google maps Navigation is a free app that only runs on Andriod right now. Speculation is that Apple not letting Google's Latitude app into iTunes may prove costly.

I agree that in the short term the Droid is going to be interesting for Apple.

However, in the long run Apple still has a few Aces up their sleeve. First, they bought their own map company. (Link: http://tr.im/DwrL) Second, if Apple releases a CDMA version of the iPhone they're going to get a whole other round of market penetration and sales. Third, the iPhone is essentially at version 1.3. The 3GS was a small hardware upgrade but the overall design is 90% the same as the original.

All of the said, I stand by what I said about the Droid. It's a good lookin' phone. Let's see how the software runs.

I've got to say, the phone itself looks pretty lame. Like just it's physical appearance. I guess that's not as important in the grand scheme of things but if I'm paying a lot of money for a top of the line phone, I don't want it to look like medic's casio electronic organizer. Flash 10 ready is pretty sweet though.

I agree. I've looked at a lot of pics of it in the last 24 hours and I think it's ugly. For some people it doesn't make a difference, but I do think it's a major flaw. Appearance isn't everything, but it's something.

Engadget's review (Link: http://tr.im/DE9x) wasn't kind to the interface. That's the thing I said they absolutely had to get right. Shame.

the slide out keyboard is retarded, what I had before the iphone had one and I rarely if ever used it through out the year i had that phone. especially if the touchscreen keyboard is the same size and right there

My roommates got the 2 droids, one with the eris. I ordered the Eris after playing with both of them because I really don't like the way the Droid looks. I don't need the turn by turn navigation, which is the only huge difference that I could see. I know the Eris only runs v 1.5, but it will probably upgrade in the next few months. I should get mine in the mail this week sometime. It is sooo much better than my BB curve

I'm really starting to get annoyed with my touch screen keyboard on the Storm and might figure a way to go back to a regular keyboard soon if I can.
