Just because jk said I thought convo was the answer doesn't mean I said that. I have my ideas but that's for another thread. Jk came out of nowhere and said some crap, I'm not naive enough though to return the favor of telling someone I've never met what they mean and how they think

Let me throw my .02 in here and say that IF the resident enrollment ever reaches 25,000, its unrealistic to think that 2/3 will live on-campus. There is no resident university of that size in the nation that includes on-campus student housing in the amount of 2/3 of it's resident population.

Furthermore, with the passing of Dr. Falwell, a distinct change in vision occurred. Capping of enrollment would NEVER have happened while he was alive. JJ favors quality over quantity. No right vs. wrong here, just a shift in philosophy. Even more, he realizes that the Vines Center cannot fully and properly serve the campus community if it is first considered as a convocation hall. Therefore, convocation will be adapted as the primary employment of the facility continues its proper shift to athletics.

Also, in calling the campus' spiritual climate "mediocre," you are revealing the true axe you seem so persistent in grinding in this debate. You must rest your assumption of this mediocrity on the idea that it has declined because convo is no longer one unified, live event. SJ's facts about current church models prove that such practice does work in many venues nationwide. And, the current shift is towards more of them, not less.

Finally, if your entire argument is based on the premise of Dr. Falwell's 50,000 goal (which he stopped stating as a 25k/25k split even while he was still alive), you must realize that with currently 11,300 resident and over 28,000 DLP, that goal will not be realized with 25,000 resident. Even Dr. Falwell realized that before his passing. I predict resident enrollment will remain capped for the next decade as University infrastructure is progressively enhanced and upgraded.
alright. I dont think its unreasonable to think that close to 2/3 of students will live on campus, at the very least, over half the students will. Certain aspects about LU cannot be compared to other universities, we are a distinct university. This is something to be remembered at all times. LU is not like other universities, and we should not lose this aspect about us.

Yes a shift in vision occurred with the passing of the torch. But its ludacris to think Jr. isnt still committed to the vision of his father, he just has a different way of going about it. IM NOT SAYING YOU ARE SAYING THIS, ITS JUST A THOUGHT, SO DONT SAY "I NEVER SAID THAT" BECAUSE IM NOT SAYING YOU AREIt will be a sad day for LU if we ever lowered standards of spiritual growth in order to accomodate Athletic growth.

I already answered that Mediocrity of campus has nothing to do with convocation. If you read any thing you would have seen just a few inches above where I said "I havent gone to convo all week" obviously I dont think that is the precipice of spiritual growth on campus. Its far too easy to fake Christianity on campus (and yes, I understand its like this on other universities, ive been to many other christian college campuses) but that doesnt mean we should just say oh well, its something we cant change.

Your last statement, your stats are outdated. LU Online is supposed to cap 50,000 students by the end of this year. And I dont see what any of that has to do with the fact that at some day LU will grow to 25,000 students. Again, we are a distinct University, we have things that seperate us from other Universities, even other Christian Universities. Yes, enrollment is capped, but I didnt hear Jr saying the school will never grow above 12,000 students.

I reeeaaallyyy hope you're going to try and argue with JK about what will happen at Liberty. I'll just sit back and laugh if that's the case.

No, SJ, no more fireworks on this topic. Rueful has done a superior job preemptively countermanding within his own post every alternative argument I could have offered.

Members of FF, especially those reading this thread: please accept my apology for apparently being the culprit in this thread's sidetracking. It was not my intent to be incendiary this evening.

Well done, rueful. My only remaining hope is that you feel better now that all of that is off your chest. I envy your energy!

And now, for the sake of this thread's original intent... I most think the plans for the Vines Center are an excellent step in the right direction for what the rendering does not show, for what Mr. Barber could only mention: suites! Going from 12 to 16 in football, and especially from 0 to ?? In basketball is an excellent step. Putting money into suites is like the gift that keeps on giving!

Yep. The suites are fantastic. Plain and simple. Just having them there (if they're maintained well) is such a big step up in terms of athletic facilities. It's easy to see why if you've paid any attention to the portable suites we've had for football the last couple of years. Hopefully it'll be easy to see why with basketball in a couple of years too. Here is a question i haven't seen raised....since this renovation is 5-10 years away, how can we actually determine that exact cost of something that far in the future? I mean a quote from someone on that job in this economy vs. the economy 10 years from now ( with inflation) to me would be vastly different.

I say this because as we are fund raising for this, something to keep in mind.

In case you have forgot... We have the most BRILLIANT Athletic Director in the History of the world. I am more than confident he already know exactly what it will cost in 10 years, and has figured out a way that in that 10 years he will only actually age 3 years.

The Real question that needs to be asked... Or Comment that needs to be made... Is Barber really going to be here in 10 years? I sure hope not....

I realize I'm a little late to this but we definitl need more of a crowd before we do this because this will look quite pethetic on TV when we only have like 2000 fans in the seats. Especially on the christmas break games with the like 300 fans we get

I don't know who RUE is, but I like their style.
I may have missed it, but did anyone mention that the proposed "renovations" for football is b/c of our long Herman Melvilleish obsession? (think on it)
As for the Vines you HAVE to do something. It would make sense if the expansion was for Convo and "Socializing" purposes. It is a very convenient spot for students to spend time. It makes NO SENSE whatsoever from an athletic perspective. Men's basketball SORT of came close last year to capacity crowds a few times. But women's hoops and Vball have never been close. (Except about 12 years ago when the ladies played after the men's team *cough* and won their first BSC Tourney due to great assistant coaches) Concerts make no sense as you probably aren't going to be able to get acts away from JPJ arena, and most Christian Concerts don't make a lot of money.
And, as was mentioned before, has anyone done a soil sample around there? I am STILL waiting from the promised parking garage behind Vines. After all, I was TOLD that the ground would support the weight!

Cider has a literary radar and whenever someone makes any sort of literary reference he can find it and give you the answer. He pointed out a literary reference I didnt even realize I made at the start of my boxing article Sunday

Thanks for the compliment, BJ. Now a question for you, Purple: is your Melville reference from a House episode, or because you know the novel about Capt. Ahab?

For you, CJ:

"There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness."

My favorite quote from it.

Cider,
Nice pick up on the House episode as well. No this was a literary reference. YOu can guess what the White Whale would represent.
I was thinking about going with Cervante's but........

No, I think Ahab was the better analogy. He was chasing something that was there, but unobtainable. Not that I don't think Doc ever went tilting at windmills or anything, but not in this case ;)

My further thoughts:

1. It won't take more than one or two more years of winning to see the attendance come up significantly at basketball games. I don't think it is unrealistic to expect 3-4,000 students to show up (I am assuming students still get in free) on a regular basis for a winner.

2. I think in 5-6 years it will not be unrealistic to see 6-10,000 every game except the cupcake NAIA christmas break games.

3. Just the promise of renovating the Vines into a top notch basketball venue will help recruit the players that will make the team something worth watching in 5-10 years and thus fill the arena. (I think we are already beginning to see that happen).

4. Convo venue issue: Don't build a 24,000 seat Dean Dome North just put a retractable roof on Williams Stadium
