NCAA ruling less about Memphis, more about Calipari

But as much as they might like to pretend otherwise in Lexington, this is less about the basketball program at Memphis than it is about its former coach.

Just look at the penalties as they’re doled out today. That’s all you need to do.

Memphis won’t get banned from television or the NCAA Tournament. Memphis won’t lose any scholarships.

The Memphis basketball program under first-year coach Josh Pastner won’t be affected as it goes forward.

The Memphis basketball program under Calipari?

Whack.

And, yes, I know, Calipari won’t be implicated in the report. That’s part of the genius of the man.

What I find it hard to believe is the NCAA won't do anything to Calliperi. It is so obvious this happened under his leadership( or lack there of ) yet he moves onto Kentucky without any punishment.

So the NCAA is about to vacate Memphis' Final Four from 2008, presumably because -- while he was in high school -- 2008 Memphis star Derrick Rose used a fraudulent test score to get into college in the first place.

Fine.

But what about the program that made it to a Final Four with a player who, the NCAA later found out, had accepted more than $2,000 from his AAU coach while still in high school? That player also should have been ineligible. That school also should have vacated the Final Four.

But that player was Corey Maggette. And that team was Duke. The year was 1999.

So nothing happened. To anyone. To this day. Nothing has happened, and it never will.

Memphis got a raw deal here. Basically, the ncaa report says the only reason the score was invalidated by the ETS was because Rose didn't reply to two letters. The ETS didn't even investigate to find any evidence if there was actually cheating, they just invalidated the score since Rose never replied to two letters. THe NCAA says they don't even have evidence Rose cheated, they are vacating the entire season simply because the ETS invalidated his test score with no evidence to support the claim Rose cheated. The report even states that the institution did not have sufficient evidence to conclude there was cheating on the SAT

The only evidence known to the Institution suggesting that (student-athlete 1) did not take the May 5, 2007, SAT is that provided by (the) forensic document examiner retained by the NCAA. Even (the forensic document examiner) does not conclude definitively that (student-athlete 1) did not take the exam. She wrote only that (student-athlete 1) "probably (emphasis added) did not write the questioned hand printing or cursive writing" on the exam form. …This is not sufficient evidence for the Institution to conclude that student-athlete 1 knowingly engaged in fraudulent conduct related to the exam.

So Memphis gets screwed without there being any concrete evidence of cheating, yet Duke gets off without even a slap on the hand when both Maggette and Myron Piggie admitted that Maggette was payed during his high school days, which would have made Maggette ineligible?

They would have still had to forfeit the final four and a majority of their wins from that season (but not all). However, Rose's brother got free stuff, Rose was declared ineligible, and Memphis forfeits games. Camby received money, Camby is declared ineligible, UMASS forfeits games. Maggette received money while he was a "amatuer", somehow is not declared ineligible, Duke goes unscathed. Two guys have money related violations and that causes penalties, another guy has very similar money related violations and the NCAA does nothing. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Darrell Arthur gets his grades changed in high school, changed to make sure he was eligible to clear the NCAA clearinghouse, and he didn't even graduate from high school, yet Kansas doesn't get punished. That doesn't make sense to me either.

A little more than a month after Rose missed a free throw that might have clinched the NCAA championship for the Tigers, the Educational Testing Service cancelled Rose's qualifying SAT score, technically rendering him ineligible to have played in that game.

It's interesting, though, that the infractions committee probed no deeper into the question of whether Rose had, in fact, taken that test. The most essential question of this entire controversy was decided when the Educational Testing Service cancelled Rose's test score in May 2008.

And why did that happen? Because the ETS sent letters to Rose's home in Chicago a couple months earlier—when Rose was attending school in Memphis and on the road playing the NCAA Tournament—and he did not respond to them.

The cancellation of the test was "based on failure to cooperate," Dee acknowledged. So an action this profound, this lasting, was undertaken at least partly because Rose didn't get his mail.

So, the NCAA passed ruling on the Rose SAT cheating fiasco because he failed to respond to letters he never received. Outstanding job, NCAA, outstanding job.

He then made the connection to World-Wide Wes, a known NIKE rep, who is based in Detroit and aided Calipari in his recruitment of Rose.

Why travel to Detroit to take an SAT when you live in Chicago? Could it be because Wes has a connection w/ someone there in a testing center/high school?

Many reporters on Thursday's conference call were consumed with the revelation that Rose's eventually-to-be-nullified SAT score was achieved in Detroit, which they seemed to accept as evidence that some chicanery had occurred.

However, a source close to the Memphis program told Sporting News that when Rose was first going through the initial eligibility process, he told the school and the NCAA he had taken the test in Detroit because the Bulls were playing the Pistons in a playoff game, and members of his family had planned to attend.

Most people don't realize how powerful this guy really is. Here is a GREAT article on WWW & his involvement with a lot of influential people......including Rose & Calipari.

Sure, it’s easy to note that Massachusetts had to vacate its Final Four appearance when Calipari coached there. It’s not as easy to remember that the coach was the one who found out Marcus Camby had hired an agent during the season and reported the violation or that Calipari was not charged with any wrongdoing.
