I can't believe my name is associated with this thread. Who is the singer in the first video? Is it the drummer?

It was 1993, what do you expect? Besides, if you read I said the MUSIC was better. a MUSIC video isn't an good if the MUSIC isn't any good.

That album hasn't even come out yet. Plus these reviews are in retrospective from over 10 years after the band broke up, so people actually KNOW how big of an impact at the gates had was and how big of an influence they had in Sweedish Metal and death metal. That's not even close to being a similar situation. i hate being right but someones gotta be...

Once again, Creed is still in existence, it's not the same situation. You can keep harping on them all you want, but it's not a valid comparison...

Wait until 10+ years until they are finally done and see what people are saying. That's the point. At the gates has been disbanded for well over 10+ years, and metal critics and bands still hail them as one of the great influences in death and sweedish metal.

KISS sucked, but I don't like their kind of music to begin with, but they were very influential and you can't deny that just because you don't like their music...

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... qy5ldhe~T1 There's another one from more of a reputable source. In Flames and Dark Tranquillity are pretty good though...
The album from 1993 was given 2 1/2 stars on allmusic.
Actually, that music video was from the 1995 album (Slaughter of the Soul), which got 4.5 stars. Their 1994 album (terminal Spirit Disease) also got 4.5 stars. In their review of the 1994 album, they basically come out and say that it didn't get five stars because of the length of it - they thought it was too short.
What ultimately knocks a few points off Terminal Spirit Disease's total score is its short running time. At a paltry six new songs and three live recordings of older material, it feels more like an EP than a real album at times. But for anyone who was really paying attention, it obvious that At the Gates were on the cusp of something great, maybe even important in the realm of death/thrash metal. And sure enough, this threat soon became reality thanks to their timeless follow-up, Slaughter of the Soul.

This thread is dangerously close to being locked for too many uses of the word "Creed' in reference to a band and/or music.

Their slaughter of the soul album also ranks in the 1st tier for top black/death metal albums of all time and top scandinavian metal albums of all time
Terminal Spirit Disease is in the 2nd tier.
With Fear I kiss the burning darkness is 3rd tier

under a serpent sun is also 2nd tier for death/black metal

At the Gates, 1st tier for top artists the same two genres

I'm going to get slammed for saying this, but I liked My Own Prison. I thought the title track, What's This Life For, One and Torn were good songs. Everything they did after that album was purely commercial arena rock, but I actually enjoyed their debut.

Yeah I know, I was just correcting my previous mistake. I got the years on the albums confused.

torn and my own prison were gtg. no slamming here...tremonti is friggin awesome...

at the gates is good but they are nowhere near on the same level as inflames by way of musicianship. their melodic metal is pretty plain and their predecessors kicked the crap out of their music... meanwhile other bands that "started it all" (ie slayer) are still 100x better than the ones who claim them as their influential inspiration.
