It better be, John retired from Tv just so he could put all his efforts into this thing. The man is a genius developer.

No, I do not have it. I've had a 360 since about the time it came out, and I've never had time to play an actual sports game on the thing, or even a game all the way through. It's disheartening to think about.

I would, but I'm moving to a new condo in a few days and I don't want to start it up, only to have it sitting in a box for a week...

...and I really don't want the wife saying, 'are you still playing that stupid video game? Why not help me unpack these boxes of useless crap that I have?'

This is the first year that I haven't purchased Madden on the release date since 1999. I feel a bit empty inside...I'll end up getting it, but it might be a few weeks.

i was up at 11:30 the night before and very tempted to go to walmart and get it at midnight. But then remembered how much my fiance hates how addicted I already am to Halo, GTA, and other various games, and should probably wait before I add another thing to the list.

anyone that wants to buy it, sports illustrated has a deal going on now that if you subscribe for a year for 49.99, you get a copy of madden free. since it costs 60 for the PS3 or xbox version, you might as well just do the SI thing, that way you get the magazines, the game, and save 10 bucks...

or i just had a really realistic dream one night. however i dont think that is the case.

You weren't dreaming. The deal is a 28 week subscription to SI for $49.99 and you get Madden 10 for free.

i have a broken xbox 360 i was given and have not done anything to because its a hassle. my ps3 i gave to my brother (i haven't purchased a non kids movie in probably 5 years so blu ray is useless to me and my phillips upconvert dvd player is awesome...i didn't really give it to him but he's been in possession of it for a while now) and my ps2 (2nd ps2) is now no longer reading discs...

i've decided to just give up video games for a while and see how it goes....but the new madden game is certainly making it hard.

I pretty much gave up on them because it costs an arm and a leg to get new systems and a new one comes out seemingly every 2-3 years anymore

I read yesterday that Red Box is going to venture into the video game market. It'll be $2 a day to rent a game. I don't think it'll work very well, unless all you want to do is try a game real quick before you buy it. If I ever rent a game, I want it for at least a week, and that would add up to at least $14. I could get a game from Blockbuster for two weeks at half that price.

The cost is prohibitively high but the system life cycle is fairly exaggerated, most likely because of the 32-bit generation that Nintendo killed fairly quickly by skipping it. The 360 came out in '05 I think. So it's been about 4 years and I haven't really heard much of anything on the front of what's next, although it's missing a few key features that some other systems have. The PS3 seems like it's built way ahead of it's time so much so that the games made don't use much of it's potential. So I can't imagine it being replaced any time soon.

And then they'll come out with an entirely new one in like 2 years and half the games wont be able to work on it.

I think the shelf life of this console generation is going to be longer than you think. Sony is still losing money on the Playstation 3. They're taking steps to see it towards profitability (such as downsizing the console), so they won't jettison it outright.

The more likely scenario, since we've really reached the pinnacle of graphic development, is to make the games more interactive (a la the wii, only less juvenile). Xbox is going to launch Project Natal in the near future, and that's going to extend the shelf life of the Xbox another few years (perhaps a decade, I've read).

The next step for gaming though probably won't be a console-based system, but instead, a subscriber (or pay-as-you-go) system, where you can download games directly to a box, much in the same way you get movies OnDemand or Netflix Live.

game informer (the magazine you get with the edge card at gamestop) had an article precisely about this a few months ago. It actually has been every 6 years that the new systems come out, not 2 or 3. The 360 came out in 07, hence why you cant get NCAA 06 on 360, but you can get 07, and why 07 has the very bare minimum (no big man on campus mode, or whatever the crap its called)

Sony is taking a lesson from how well the PS2 still does almost 10 years after it was released, and is planning on the PS3 doing the same thing. They understand its expensive and are slowly going to transition everything to that, but make it so the PS3 is the sony console for a number of years.

and I dont see how this

makes any sense. You would need some sort of console to get the subscription to download to, and even so, there is a reason why PS3 games dont work on 360's, other than just to create competition. Yeah I think there will be the instant downloads like with Netflix on the 360 for games, but they already have that on the 360. I think in 4 or 5 years there will still be entirely new systems coming out. Project Natal will change the 360, but it wont really be perfected until the next system

By console I meant a physical piece of hardware you put a disc or cartridge into.

And the 360 came out in November 2005, not '07.

The big reason why there won't be any new consoles in the next few years is that game developers are finally hitting their stride when it comes to next-gen games.

Backwards compatibility is a non-issue for me. If I wanted to play the old games, I'd keep the old system. I get a new system to play new games.

Besides, what your saying would keep you from buying.....almost anything.

My Xbox has had the red ring of death since last October.

It's been sitting in the FOC collecting dust ever since.

There was like a 3 year warranty on that.

Backwards compatibility isn't the issue here, it's the fact that once new systems come out, the new games are often not made for the older system, so you won't have access to those games unless you buy the new system. THe PS2 is a bit of an exception as there are still new games coming out for it, but I think that has a lot to do with just how crappy of a system the PS3 is. Up until very recently, sony and nintendo were churning out new consoles every 2-3 years and you'd have to fork out a few hundred dollars every 2-3 years to ensure you'd be able to play the newest games. Now instead of that, the console just breaks down after a few years (exception the Wii apparently) and you have to buy a new one or pay a crap load of money to get it fixed unless it's under warranty.

I was just reading an article about the PS3 slim and Sony is using a 10 year platform life cycle model. I remember some kid getting a PS2 in our dorm and not letting anybody play it in 2000. They were still making games for it a year ago or so. They may still be, I don't know.

When I checked on gamespot, they still listed a bunch of games with TBA as the release date, so I assumed the PS2 was still getting new games since there were some with 2009 release dates as well.
