Both seem a little far-fetched on the surface, but Maryland always has played Big East schools, and the balance of power in the ACC is in the south. And Boston College is learning that life in the ACC, where it has no natural rivals, isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The days of considering a Memphis or a Central Florida or an association with Army and Navy are over. The Big East, which went 4-2 in bowl games last season and has won three of its last four BCS games, is thinking of itself as operating from a position of strength.

To list a reason like "Maryland always has played Big East schools" is stretching it a little. If that's your reason, you really have nothing to base the story on. And BC was stupid to leave in the first place. The Big East would take them back, it's where they belong, but you can keep Maryland....and Virginia Tech.

I'm confused as to why Memphis and UCF wouldn't be considered? Both would upgrade the Big East in Football & Baseball -- and I'd think baksetball is a wash in adding solid memphis and sub-par UCF...

I don't see either MD or BC moving... What about Notre Dame? They already compete in the Big East in several sports -- now that might be a bit far fetched, but since ND & the Big Ten are always flirting.... Certainly would be something to think about as an option

That will be recouped in a matter of just a few years since their football and basketball teams fly to all their acc games. Move to a conference closer to their geographic region, and they could cut travel costs tremendously. Being in the Big East for football means they could probably win the Big East nearly every year. You know what that means? BCS game nearly every year = big $$$. How's that for economics?

See, if revenue were equal, the school that spends less makes more profit (profit equals revenue minus expenses). If Boston College were to spend 10 million more on athletics, it makes sense to maximize revenue.

Why spend 60 million and make about $500k profit when a school of BC's caliber could spend much less money in the big east and bring in a bigger profit? It's really not that hard to understand, for a school of BC's caliber, they could spend less in the big east and make a bigger profit. it's more economically feasible for them to be in the big east than the acc. sure they may be bringing in more revenue, but their expenses are through the roof compared to other SEC schools who are arguably better or just as good as BC is overall and some of those schools even have a better reputation and more recognizable name than others...

Well, there's residual income that comes with being in a better conference that doesn't show up in the athletic department's ledger. Boston College gets more exposure, which in turn boosts enrollment numbers and alumni donations.

Frankly though, I do not have the entire BC budget in front of me. I'm assuming you don't, either, so none of this really matters. The BC President, though, probably does. And he says it makes more economic sense to stay in the ACC... so I'll defer to him (or her).

Well, unless BC is lying to the federal government and the department of education, i have a significant portion of their financial numbers. In their last year in the Big East in 2005, BC had a profit of $1,425,156. In 2007, which is the most recent data on the government's website, BC had a profit of just $138,032. They brought in 8 million more revenue on 2007 compared to 2005, but their expenses increased by 9.3 million, nullifying a huge chunk of their profit. If they keep up that rate with their 2008 numbers, they'll have a fairly significant spending deficit...

Unique in NCAA's Division I, Vanderbilt does not administer intercollegiate athletics separately from other student organizations, but as a part of the university's Division of Student Life, which oversees all student organizations and activities.

Lost to a school where athletics is run by some of the same people who oversee intramurals and the hip hop union (yes, that's a real club at Vandy)? That can't shine very favorably on BC.

The ACC does get more exposure... here, where 90% of us live. In ACC country.

But on a side note, I do know that in the past Maryland has often felt slighted and out of place by the ACC and it's preferential treatment toward the NC teams. I don't know if that's enough of a reason to leave.

Sly, you are an intelligent man you know the Big East has larger media markets, however a lot of those markets are in pro sports towns, thus exposure is less. over the past years the Big East has had better basketball, but overall the ACC is a more prestigious conference in all sports than the Big East. Now if your comparing against the SEC, Totally different. you have always had this hatred for the ACC, or anything east of the Mississippi.
