there's a few modular rooms that have been open to the weather for years. I don't think those will be salvagable. But there is an apartment building about 5 or 6 stories high that never had a roof on it. I wonder if they'll have to knock it down. That would be a shame. Also, I'd just like to add that I think this is a mistake for LU. They're taking full responsability for this just because they're embarassed they used their name, and not because they think it's a good investment. That's bad news.

While I agree with your sentiment LUConn... I'm not sure if that's the only reason they are doing it... It seems like they have a bigger picture in mind. With all of the talk of wanting to develop the rest of the mountain, this does look horrible on them. They have a minority stake and Dr. Falwell has put himself out there... Yes it's about a name but it's a name that means dollars to LU and the mountain. If the Doc shows that he's allowed projects on the mountain to die and hurt investors... he is less likely to get support for future projects up on the mountain... so yeah I agree with you that it's about the name... but I think there is a huge financial advantage to seeing this project through.

What's wrong with getting everything at the school finished first before doing all of this other crap? Fix the parking situation, get some teams lights, get rid of the circle dorms, then do all of this other pointless stuff. If TRBC wants to do it, fine, I don't care, but if Liberty University does it, I think they should take care of their current students and facilities before they start building other stuff.

This helps in the long run to get funding for other projects and improve the master plan. With growth there will always be projects ongoing that need improvement. The leadership has to get involved in projects before others are done to keep a steady growth plan moving. This is just one step in a long line of plans. Besides, it sounds like they bought into the project 'to give the developer more time' so it looks like they'll be working on this in the future, not immediately but they had to get in if they wanted to save it from bankrupcy and then see an outside developer put whatever they want on that piece of property right in the middle of Liberty Mountain.

Let's just be real honest for a moment. LU is dragging its feet on the parking problem because of the crazy amount of $$$ parking tickets bring in. While i was in school we took one day and rode around and counted tickets from like 8-3, we had some people stationed on the circle and others on the hill. This was back in like 2000 or 2001, and we were going to write a story about it i think for the newspaper ( needless to say it didn't make it thru the censors) But i think there was at 75-100 parking tickets written that day in various amounts. If the average amount is like $30-$40 and you have what 5-6 months of class days......you do the math.

The circle dorms are a mess, but i would imagine that once all the dorms are East are built, those would be the next to be addressed......

I did some research a long time ago on the baseball lights........one thing i remember is its a big expense and since we don't charge any $$$ to get into the baseball games, its gotta come from somewhere else. Plus i can imagine that it wouldn't be very cheap to run them and if we got them you can bet LCA would also be using the field as well. That would then run up the cost even more plus requires more grounds keeper work with the addtional games. I am sure there was more too it, but thats all i can remember.

I also think before you start saying " i think they should take care of the current students and facilities before doing other stuff" - you only need to look back about 3-4 years and we had far less than what you have. Just that long ago Campus East wasn't around and Erickson wasn't usable, thats a big "upgrade" in facilities if you ask me.

Now you've done it. This is like a dog whistle to SJ. It an idea that only irritates current students. They understand shortly after graduating though.

Yes, I know we have it better than 3-4 years ago. There are also 4000-5000 more students than there were then. Before they do this Liberty Village crap, they need to upgrade the rest of the things to make the current campus not feel like an overcrowded high school.

SJ--can't you figure it out. The only things that are upgraded are things to attract MORE students, not help the existing student body. BTW, I walked by the David's Place parking lot--10% full, if that. I have thus come to the conclusion that THERE IS NO PARKING PROBLEM ON CAMPUS. When that lot starts to overflow, THEN we can complain about parking.

Actually, while I don't think we'll be highly involved with the Liberty Village project aside from bailing it out, we need to do whatever it takes to finish it. That project and our involvement in promoting it are one of the things that left us with another black eye in this town. I understand where you're coming from, but they've needed to make this situation right for a long time. I fully support them in doing that.

The parking problem is a student problem. Blaming administration for students who abuse the system ::cough, cough:: doesn't get anyone anywhere. Students have always violated the parking restrictions. I was one of them (and truth be told, most on this board were). The reality is that the administration has to push forward and keep fining students who park in the wrong place. I'm not a conspiricy theorist who says that they keep the parking low on purpose just to ticket people. I actually think that the growth is driving much of this and to be honest, 2.2 million in the big scheme of things is a drop in the hat (especially if they financed it) so this is a non-issue. With every advancement people will complain.

i think on the subject of cars on campus, they shouldnt allow people from virginia to brings cars on campus. mainly, because i am yet to see a car with virginia plates (A) use a turn signal, (B) understand how to operate a 4 way stop (C) understand how to operate a 3 way stop, (D) understand a common law known as the right of way, and (E) look behind them before slamming it into reverse out of a parking space. It free up alot more spaces, making everyone happier.

another whining student. every state represented is involved in breaking traffic laws. i was riding through campus recently and almost go hit by someone from wisconsin, because they rolled through a stop sign.

yeah, campus driving is like a different country. Where else can you park your car wherever you want as long as you have your hazard lights on it's acceptable? I havent worn my seatbelt in 6 years thanks to a habit I learned from campus driving. Don't even started on how many are allowed in a car. 8 in backseat, 3 in the trunk, a couple under the hood and 1 in the driver's lap. As long as you get to dinner alive, it doesnt matter.

im not really whining, im just saying that people need to at least learn to use their turn signal, its so aggrivating when a car is coming and they dont have their signal on and then they turn, wen if they had had their signal on you could have gone, but instead have to wait another like 5 minutes for another break in the traffic, and when their is one, the same thing is probably going to happen again. yeah , i drive a box, and you can really cram people into thsoe, and last week i picked up some random people who were like hitchhiking up to campus church and two of them had to sit in the trunk. But hey, Jerry told us last wed at convo to cram into one car rather than two because of parking

The company said the Liberty Village project could eventually grow to 1,500 units and include a large medical facility on its 140-acre site.
I envision Liberty Medical Center and LU EMS.

Maybe PAmedic Memorial Emergency Department (give that one about 75 yrs)

So, I got up this morning and went outside to feed the dogs. There was burning in the air. But hey, it's leaf burning season. A little while later, I noticed it snowing. It's 60 degrees out. I was very confused until I went and found a huge snowflake and picked it up. I noticed it was actually ashe and it was coming down everywhere. Stupid leaf burners. THis must be an awful big pile of leaves to have such a large pillar of smoke and ash. Anyway, I was driving into town and noticed that the large, half-finished apartment complex at LV is engulfed in flames. How about that. Controlled burn is what they call it. I now have an apartment building spread across my lawn. I hope it's good fertilizer

It was a controlled burn on one apartment building...
...the building was deemed a hazard by Campbell County and JF ordered it burned...
...a coordinated effort by LU's building and grounds dept and area fire departments.

Kinda odd to me. In most places they'd just take some big equipment to it and tear it down.

That would require more man hours, money, etc

This allows us to do something else for the city/county that may not be big, but they all add up 8)

Back home we have controlled burns in places where the building isn't entirely huge. It's very good training for the firemen.

agree w/ SJ for once- it gives rookie FF's the opportunity to witness fire behavior up close and personal in a carefully controlled setting without secondary hazards.

Good thinking LU!
