Tubing on Liberty Mountain
Tubing at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre

The Liberty University Alumni Relations Office is inviting Central Virginia alumni to return to campus on Aug. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the “245 Initiative,” an event for alumni living in the 245 Zip Code. This will also be the official launch of the Lynchburg Alumni Chapter.

Those planning to attend will have an opportunity to tour Liberty’s new year-round ski slope, the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, and tube on the slopes for the first time before the Aug. 29 grand opening.

The entire event is free and gives alumni a chance to reconnect with one another and access LU’s first-class recreational facilities, including the new Thomas Indoor Soccer Center, the LaHaye Student Union and the LaHaye Ice Center. Plus, Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. will address alumni at 1 p.m. in the Tilley Student Center. While on campus, attendees may also browse through LU’s newest addition, the Liberty University Barnes & Noble Bookstore.

The festivities will include great food and games for the whole family. To RSVP for this incredible afternoon of food, fun and fellowship, please contact the Alumni Relations Office at alumni@liberty.edu or call (800) 628-7973.

OK, after spending the day at LU's new facilities, I think I can now comfortably say that LU bears a small resemblance to the school I graduated from 5 years ago.

That indoor soccer facility is amazing. What other school can say they have something like that? I was born 10 years too early.

The Snowflex was awesome. I had a blast. It really felt like skiing on real snow. I can't wait until it is open full time. You need to wear pants and long sleeves though, I fell on the lift and scraped my leg.

As for the rest of the amenities, the Tilley center was amazing, as was the indoor soccer facilities. They almost make me wish I was still a student.

yeah it was a good thing they opened it today for us. The staff at the LMSC (Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre) really had a lot of stuff to figure out, logistically. I could tell it was annoying some people, but what the heck did you expect? First day open to the public somewhat and you didn't pay anything. Let them get some of the kinks out.

I saw a couple of injuries and I wasn't there that long so I imagine that will be a daily problem. I bet they have to get a permanent EMT up there someday. They eventually shut down the bunny slope around 4:30 cause some kid was down for a very long time. Not sure how you get that hurt on the bunny slope.

Yeah it really is amazing what they've done to the place in such a short period of time. Sure would have been nice to play intramurals at the new facilities.

I had no problems with the ski staff. That was actually the quickest I was able to get rentals ever. It was 15 minutes tops from arriving on the mountain to getting in line for the lift. The lift was the most difficult thing for me. I made at least a dozen runs, and the last time I went up my arms gave out and I had to walk the rest of the way. The guy at the top showed me how to set the bar behind so it can push you up rather than having to be pulled.

There will be 3 shifts of the Lynchburg Fire Dept. up there during business hours. I'm sure I am going to see more of the Flex than I care to.

That ski lodge is legit.

The only small thing that I think would set off the snowflex is a PA system outside. Have some music going and be able to announce things throughout the day.

That is still being worked on. They had a few electrical issues so they left it off.
