I'm not surprised. A lot of people use it kind of as an RSS feeder by following news tweets. And obviously there was a huge influx of users who signed up because it got really popular but they didn't get it like a lot of people don't. I think it takes a while for it to make sense. Or at least to gain followers.

I think we've talked about this before. This doesnt take into account people using software based apps like Twirl, Twitterberry, etc. I've never posted from the web only my phone or software.

Interesting Twitter stats:

• 72.5% of all users joining during the first five months of 2009.
• 85.3% of all Twitter users post less than one update/day
• 21% of users have never posted a Tweet
• 93.6% of users have less than 100 followers, while 92.4% follow less than 100 people.
• 5% of Twitter users account for 75% of all activity
• More than 50% of all updates are published using tools – mobile and Web-based – other than Twitter.com. TweetDeck is the most popular non-Twitter.com tool with 19.7% market share.

Another interesting Twitter stat...
Dell Pulls in $3 Million Using Free Tweets on Twitter

By Patricia Resende, newsfactor.com

Biz Stone, Twitter's cofounder and CEO, continues to look for ways for the micro-blogging Web site to make money. While he's looking for the best business model, other companies are using Twitter to make millions.

Computer maker Dell has cashed in on Twitter's popularity by posting deals on Twitter.com/DellOutlet and several other Twitter accounts, and it has not cost the company a single penny.

Dell Outlet uses Twitter as a way to message coupons, clearance events, and new arrival information to those looking for Dell technology at a discounted price, according to Dell's Stephanie Nelson, who blogged about Dell's success with Twitter.

"Since we started back in 2007, we've earned more than $2 million in revenue at DellOutlet, attributed directly to our Twitter activity," Nelson said. "We've surpassed $2 million in revenue in terms of Dell Outlet sales, but we're also seeing that it's driving interest in new products as well."

Dell's Twitter site is also moving people to Dell.com, Nelson said. When those sales are factored in, Dell has actually reached $3 million in overall sales just from tweets on Twitter.

Twitter missed a great monetization opportunity with verified accounts. It sounds like they're offering them for free, when they could have charged for them. Not a ton, but enough to make the company some money.

The celebs would pay it, just because it would be a way to control their identity. Even if a celeb isn't on Twitter, they'd pay a nominal fee to make sure someone doesn't take their name and start posting garbage. Non-celebs could even get into the act if they wanted to make sure their business Twitter account was secure.
{edit to add} Looks like they're not doing it with businesses yet, so that could be a way to make some money in the future.

Because instead of telling the entire neighborhood, the people that keep you on their Twitter, Facebook, and AIM lists actually somewhat give a crap about you. That's why they keep you on the list.

yeah, people always think they're funny making that analogy but they're really not the same. Not only are you saying what you're thinking to only people you know, and would most likely say to them if they were there, you can also read what they have to say. So it's a lot less attention whoring than you'd think.

And the part about Away Messages, that's just dumb. Most places of work require that you add an away message to your email when you're...away. Unless away messages means something I'm not aware of, in which case I'm just dumb.

And that would make more sense. I just never really use any IM services, so it didn't come to mind.

Very true. But that doesn't answer my question. Is that all that Twitter really is?
I quoted this in another thread, but this is how I view it/use it:

"Twitter is a guy you can always elbow in the side and say, "Hey, look, a guy in a clown suit just threw up!" And I don't have 400-800 words to say about that, I just wanted to say that one thing."

That's really all I use it for. I take a picture of something that I see that I find funny and make a comment about it.

Here's my twitter portfolio

I went to CampusTweet for the first time today, and noticed that Liberty has the top spot on that site (they rank the schools by the number of users). We're #1, yeah!

I'm pretty sure that would mean I'd have to stop posting on FlameFans permanently.

He thought I insulted his wife one time, but I didn't really, he just didn't get my joke, which was meant to insult him. Tally really got the "discussions" going, but it also got me tired of arguing on here too much, so now I really try not to.
