If you're renting the hardware for the sole purpose of getting HD channels, then yes, there is an extra cost. I rent the box primarily for the DVR service. Because I have the box, the HD channels are available at no additional cost to me. I apologize for not being more specific.

I agree with Rueful - an a la carte option would be a much better approach to cable - obviously it can be done because they can block premium channels. There are so many channels I would nix from the package just because they're annoying and what about a 'favorites button' that works in reverse. One direction I can skip all the stupid channels but surfing the other direction its back through all the crap I didn't select as a 'favorite'.

But geez what would I do without Life Time - "television for women who hate men" - where would I get my ideas about how to be nasty to women?

I switched to verizon for $19.99 a month garunteed for two years for DSL. I am getting rid of cable due to priorities and anyting I really want to watch i.e. sports ans tv shows, can be found on the internet. Even if you look at Verizon with the Sattelite package, it is still $70 plus a month. Way too expensive for what I need now.
