Bill Simmons has been all over the mentality that the NBA owners had this season -- many teams were so scared at the prospect of taking on money that they sat back and said, 'nah, we're good'. The Cavs thought they could win without Shaq and did nothing, and lost... If the Cavs had Shaq (instead of, say, Ben Wallace), I'm marginally sure they would have beaten Orlando.

By the way, have you seen reports that Mike Brown, the reigning coach of the year, is now on the hot seat?

That's already been debunked...

i think an old shaq is better than an old ben wallace or an old joe smith. that would give them a beter post player. not a great one anymore, but better than what they have.

an old shaw gives them someone that can score down low, get to the foul line, can still command a double team, and can play defense. they don't have anyone close to that right now.

Terrible mistake. Suns experiment failed.. why would it work in Cleveland?

They should have taken the Coach of the Year tag after that dismal performance against the Magic, IMO.

the personnel they the suns had don't go well with shaq - they took a halfcourt center and tried to put him on a team built around the fastbreak, then hired a coach who wanted to run a halfcourt game and build on defense, two thing swhich the suns aren't built to do. since halfcourt didnt work because it didnt fit their personnel, they fired that coach and hired a new one to go back to the fastbreak, no defense approach, and that doesn't fit shaq at all.

shaq in cleveland would work a heck of a lot better than it did in phoenix. that team actually fits his game - a slow paced halfcourt team (25th in the NBA in pace factor, Phoenix was 4th) that plays defense (cleveland was third in defensive efficiency, phoenix just 25th). that fits shaq perfectly at this stage of his career.

we are talking about shaq right?

it will work for a little bit, but then after 5 minutes of trying to run down the floor and play both offense and defense and not passing out because he is out of shape...

its putting a guy who was great into a system that needs a guy who is currently great

One thing youre seeing a lot of is teams are looking for bigs but not necessarily 7 ft+ guys (like Hasheem Thabeet) but guys more in a 6'7"-6'10" range that can get up and down the floor. THey are going to have to rework their offense if they get Shaq in light of what you said Th3rd

Problem with that route is that virtually every single "athletic" type big man as you describe can't handle the "traditional" post player ala Shaq

i agree you need a guy who can bang with the best of them, but you also need a guy who will be able to bang with the best of them for the next 10 years

shaq will not be in the league for the next 10 years and is in fact on his way out. he can make them a better team in the regular season, but shaq will be worn out come playoff time and will not be the player they need him to be

Three questions:

#1) Where are you going to find a player who can 'bang with the best of them' for the next 10 years?
#2) Why not acquire Shaq and play him on a reduced schedule (say, sit until February) and have him not as worn down come playoff time?
#3) If you are surrendering dead weight for a chance to win a title, don't you have to do that, and worry about 10 years much, much later?

#1)You aren't going to find a guy, and that includes Shaq, simply because a lot of guys are soft and the best of them are few
#2)That could very well work, though you still have to look at him being out of shape and as you can see from his time in Phoenix a run and gun offense is not Shaq and will never be Shaq
#3)You also have to look, does Shaq=Automatic Title or does Shaq=Contention for 2 years while he eats up money, and if it is the 2nd one then why not get 2 or 3 guys on free agency who can play Cleveland style ball and will be around for more then 2 years and yes they may not all be Shaq in his prime, but Shaq now is not Shaq in his prime. So the option is get a fat contract for an aging center or get 3 guys who are role players and still young and will be around when it matters

Lebron doesn't need more role players. He already has a solid cast of role players. He needs someone that can be more of a role player. That's what Shaq can be...

The scuttlebutt this evening was that the Cavs and Suns were closing in on the now-famous Shaquille O'Neal for Ben Wallace trade. The two teams have discussed the trade, off and on, since February and several league sources thought the deal was nearing completion tonight.

from rotoworld/yahoo sports
Trade talks between the Cavaliers and Suns "have gained momentum" and the Cavs might be close to acquiring Shaquille O'Neal, according to Andrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The Cavaliers are offering salary relief in the form of aging big man Ben Wallace ($14 million salary next season, but would likely accept a buyout) and Sasha Pavlovic (only $1.4 million guaranteed). The Suns also want cash and future draft picks, which could be a sticking point, and both sides are trying to bring a third team into the deal.

POSTED: June 24 -- 9:11 p.m. ET

Chris Broussard: A league source tells me there's a 50-50 chance of the Shaq-to-Cleveland trade going down either tonight or tomorrow. "It could be a three-team deal, but it doesn't have to be," says the source.

I'm also told that Chris Kaman and Tyson Chandler are being shopped and could have new homes tomorrow.
