I don't have THAT common of a name and nearly every conceivable variation was taken. Once again, I still don't get the point.

Really? I'm friends with at least 10 people who have my name, and I was still able to get a great variation of it.

i was able to get my first choice, which facebook suggested - lastname.FIMI (first initial, middle initial). of course, when i logged into faccebook it took me forever to find where i got to pick a username because tehre was no link anywhere to be found, i just ended up doing a google search to find out where to go.

For everyone who signed up with a period in their username, you should probably know that Facebook ignores it. I'm not sure why the suggested using it.

facebook.com/firstname.lastname goes to the same place as facebook.com/firstnamelastname

doesn't ignore mine. i just typed it in with the period and it went right to my profile and the address bar still displays the period in it...

Got my third choice. First choice was my first name (taken). Second choice was first initial and last name (also taken). First Initial, Middle Initial and Last Name was available. Easy enough.

tried my first and last name (taken) so I went with a hybrid of my name and my radio name.
