Scout-team safety looking to leave Tech

BLACKSBURG - Life after high school hasn't exactly gone as planned for Kent Hicks, once considered one of the top safety prospects in the nation.

After being denied admission to Maryland, Hicks ended up at Virginia Tech. The redshirt sophomore has not made a tackle in his Hokies career and has yet to climb above third on the depth chart.

Hicks wasn't at practice on Wednesday, and when asked about his absence, coach Frank Beamer said Hicks is exploring other options.

"He's looking into transferring," Beamer said. "He's checking with a couple schools.

"We've visited, and I want every guy to have success in his life. That's what he's looking at right now."

Beamer said if Hicks decides not to transfer, he'd be welcomed back but added that he'd be a scout-team player for now.

"The kid's got a chance to play (somewhere else), and maybe a new situation would be good for him," Beamer said.

Coming out of high school, the former Culpeper star was rated the No. 5 safety in the nation by Scout.com and No. 12 at his position by Rivals.com. Both scouting services rated him the No. 2 prospect in Virginia.

PS. Today is the first day of practice for the fall Pre-season for UNM Lacrosse. This will be UNM's first season as a member of the USL MDIA since 1997 and the first season ever as a member of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse conference.
