I haven't decided if I like that or not. I'm still on the fence.
I like it, but I'm wondering if something THAT big, with so much white, might not make spotting the ball (at times) somewhat difficult. just a thought- looks beautiful though- can't wait to see it in person.

I'm betting when they fill the "grass" with rubber/sand the lines and text will be sharper as well, making the graphics stand out even more.

More Rubber Pellets Arrive In Preparation For Final Stage of FieldTurf Installation
August 23, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

Wednesday saw continued work on the final stages of the Williams Stadium FieldTurf installation. Workers spent most of the day finishing little projects like the stitching of the south endzone’s “Liberty” lettering. Also touched up was the stitching on the Liberty Flames logo at midfield. Arriving today were more rubber pellets that will be inserted with sand to form the foundation of the turf. That process will begin in the next day or two.

Coach Rocco said they go over it something like 13 times with the sand/rubber stuff and that that's getting done this week (I think). It should be one of the nicest fields in all of college football when they're done.

The process takes 52 hours ... 13 levels of sand and rubber at four hours a pop.

It must've been that it was getting started this week. Honestly, I was trying to find out the schedules for the games for the rest of the week while he was talking at one point. I realized that I didn't print them off before the meeting and needed to get that done. I tried to multi-task though.

assuming they get that started by tomorrow and spend 3 full days on it, they should be ready for play/practice Monday AM, no?

Does anyone know what type of cleat is worn on this surface? Is it a regular rubber spike or do the players go to more of a running shoe?

That is the plan.

I'm glad someone else brought up the point about mixed feelings on the logo at midfield...I agree with the above post that the logo looks sharp on an all white background, like the wall, it brings out the richness of the colors and its stark contrast against the all white background. Another example of where I think the logo looks best is in the picture of the flags in front of Hancock; the white one with the logo makes it easy to see the logo, one can immediately see the detail of the logo...there is no room for any part of it to get "lost" on that background.

This was mentioned on the "LU Letters Logo Thread," but putting the logo in something like a flag graphic allows it to be translated to any color background without extra manipulation to make it work on various color palettes. Here is a better option than the one I posted over on the other thread; in those the circle does minimize the effect of the logo, in these images the logo is prominent and the focal point. (An addition like this to the current logo on the field wouldn't necessarily mean they would have to replace the current logo, they could just sew in the additional white and flag outline, specifics which could be hashed out in FieldTurf's computers.)

Just throwing some ideas out: Logo slightly slanted:

Image

Albeit, a red outline, instead of black (like the letters in the endzone) as the actual lines of the flag and none of the extra red (these images were manipulated in paint, so not enough time to make it completely pristine, but it's an idea.) Could also use a light gray inside the flag as another option. Putting it in something like a flag with a white background also makes it easier to see on a helmet, and would allow it to appear on the helmet with the official color scheme for the logo, since using the official colors seems seems to be their desire as referenced in the Brand Identity Guide.

Logo with no slant:

Look, this administration has done nothing that wasn't the right thing. I'm sure they looked at both and decided on which would look better. If we didn't have the white background behind it like we do now, people would be saying we need it.

A molded cleat or rubber spike is best.

Can we get a closeup of the logo in midfield? I liked it from a distance. I think this field already looks great. Can't wait to see the completed job next week!!!

FYI...I saw the field today in person, and I now like the white background on the logo.

I wasn't expecting the field to look as shiny as it did...is that because they haven't put in all of the rubber pellets...or do all fieldturf fields look shiny like that....I've never seen one before?

The shine will disappear when the turf is "standing up". Right now it is matted down. The machine that drops the sand and the rubber will also make the turf stand up. It will look like a freshly cut yard 365 days a year. I believe the length will be somewhere between 2 and 2 and half inches. There will also be an additional machine that will be the equivilent of a zamboni for ice. It will make sure the turf is always standing up.

Speaking of "Warm" how come we aren't going with more pastels? A hot pink would just look fab on one of the goal posts. Any word on which game we will be having as Soul Force Day?

I think they decided on white goal posts for a reason. Scientific studies carried on over the past few months have concluded that the color Yellow, combined with the prevaling winds in Williams Stadium, along with the average of the relative humidty on Liberty Mountain, were causitive factors in the many football + Goal post collisions over the past few years. Since you can't change the climatology, they decided to change the goal post color.

Saturday morning update: They were pouring the sidewalks, preparing for the pavement, planting trees and flowers and laying mulch and sod this morning. There will also be black iron fencing leading from each side of the FOC up the home and away hillsides.

PLEASE!!!!! Someone in the neighborhood help those of us who live hours away by posting some photo updates of the progress on the stadium, foc, etc. A close up of the logo at mid-field. Oooooo, why not rent an airplane or 'copter and get some aerial shots? ;-) Anything at all would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone name a school in college football that uses anything but yellow goal posts? I'm pretty sure it's pretty standard to have them yellow.

They repaint the posts flourescent yellow before every season. It fades to just yellow over the course of a year.
