we've actually been talking about this for a while over at UNCA forums...Found out last night that the coaches would be leaving... But the official announcement was made this afternoon that the baseball coaches are 'resigning'. Assistant coach Tommy Smith who has been a high school coach in Asheville for around 20 years is expected to be offered the job. Tommy has coached such players as Camerin Maybin, and Darren Holmes and has developed numerous top (I believe 4 top 5 rounders?) picks at the high school level. Obviously he lacks much college experience (2 years) but he has a lot of ex big league connections (i.e. lots of potential donors) and he knows western north carolina and its high school coaches better than anyway. Asheville has to start keeping local kids and not losing them to schools from outside the region (or even Western). Not my first choicem but considering the budget issues and the state of the program...a guy like Tommy could turn asheville into an above average big south program.
