Hiker’s Outpost, a well-known store in Wyndhurst, plans to sell all its merchandise and close on May 2.

The shop on Enterprise Drive is going out of business after several months of plummeting sales, which reversed the rapid growth it had in earlier years.

And the Liberty connection:
“We hadn’t been established long enough to weather this type of a recession,” said Stephen Preacher, a Liberty University business professor who owns the store.
He was actually one of my MBA profs (BUSI 560-Corporate Responsibility). This economic downturn sucks.

Or is it the exorbitant rents and low retail traffic flow in Wyndhurst?

He didn't have a problem getting customers according to the article, he did cite rent as being a problem once the downturn hit.

I didn't go there because the stuff i would get at hikers outpost was about 20% more expensive than the stuff i'd get at dicks.

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Buying that stuff retail is so expensive. When CMT Sports went out of business, we got some great deals. I hope it's the same here.

Sometimes I wonder why these stores don't just close immediately to save on rent and then sell the remaining inventory on ebay, instead of taking a loss by clearancing out everything.

Nothing succeeds in Wyndhurst except for service type businesses...there are some property owners willing to do revenue share just to get someone in there...then you may be able to succeed

Rent on Wards Rd. and the South side of town is a lot more expensive from what I've heard.

It makes sense, but I'm just saying.

Yes, rent at places like Wards Crossing is more...but you can justify it by the amount of SHOPPING traffic, not to be confused with traffic....Wyndhurst has all the traffic in the world but they are only using it as a cut through and could careless about shopping.

Some store owners tried to go after the city for being promised a certain amount of traffic and it not happening

wyndhurst sounded like a good idea but has turned out to be a debacle. I feel bad for all the owners, such as Preacher, who made the poor decision to open business there. The only person who seems to do well there is Tarazona. That place is always packed.

My roommate my senior year owned a toy store over in Wyndhurst. I went by to visit him a few years ago, after they moved from River Ridge Mall, and traffic was light. Found out that he closed it up a while back. He had counted on affluent traffic to make a profit, but rent was too high and traffic was too low

agreed. it would be much smarter. cut your costs, sell your inventory at something other than firesale prices = salvage something out of it.
