He redshirted for Niagara this year, so he still has all 4 years of eligibility. He played AAU with Johnny Flynn and still plays with him in the off season. He comes down to LU and plays with Minaya. He will be down here at the end of this month.

a 6"2 170lbs jr guard, plays with great intensity. solid rebounder, streaky shooter. One of the top defenders in the 2008 class. Has suprising athletic ability. Has a great scorer on the other wing in Robby Seyler a premier offensive wepon in New York. Ventry was at 5 star all american camp Coach Witherspoon granted him with Deffensive player of camp. Had a disapointing year at Lew-Port High but look for Ventry to have a great senior season. Plays aau circut at WNY Wilcats averaged 14ppg 7rpg.
This is an old article but still.

Niagara is building a pretty good program up there. So that's a good sign. However, he would only have 3 years left after he sits out a year for transferring.

Would he have to sit out a year if he didn't actually play in a game?

hmmm, good thought. Maybe not. I guess it depends on the purpose the NCAA has for making players sit out a year. Of which I do not know.

He isn't listed on their roster. I know he redshirted, but you'd think he would be listed on their roster still.

I don't know, I just read through this:

http://www.ncaapublications.com/Uploads ... 6fdec5.pdf

While it seems extremely confusing, I think if he practiced with the team, he'd have to sit out.

Relevant information starts at page 20
Exceptions are applied by the new school
(sometimes called the certifying school). The
certifying school determines whether you are
eligible to play right away without sitting out
a year.

The certifying school has the authority to
grant exceptions, based on the conditions
that we explain here:
- You can use an exception during your first
year of collegiate enrollment only if you
are a qualifier.
[(Note: if you are a qualifier, have signed
a National Letter of Intent, and transfer
during the first year after you enrolled
full time, you may have to sit out for a
period of time at the certifying school,
even if you meet an exception. (For more
information about the National Letter of
Intent program, go to Page 27.)]

- If you are a partial qualifier or a
nonqualifier, you must spend at least one
academic year in residence before you are
allowed to use an exception.

- You cannot use an exception if you are
sitting out a year of residence at your
current school.
I take that to mean he can't use the exception.

Niagra has 13 players on their website roster and 5 of them are transfers from Big East or A-10 schools. My guess is Ventry is a walkon at Niagra; a member of the practice squad who didn't play in a game. If that's the case, he could play next year, but I wouldn't expect him to make any huge impact.

This is not a personal attack on this player because I don't know anything about him but in general I am not interested in giving up a scholarship spot to a 6'2" guard transfer who couldn't make the team at a school the caliber of Niagra. (Now ACC, Big East, something like that, maybe) but I would prefer we save it for a better prospect down the road. I think if you are going to accept a transfer or a juco they need to demonstrate or at least make the argument that they will make an immediate impact towards improving the team.

I do not see this happening. I asked someone who would have to know about this kid and they have never heard his name before....maybe he wants to walk on?

I've heard the names of the guys that want to transfer and this kid was never mentioned. Who knows though...

If they recruited him then he cannot practice with the team and not be considered a "Counter" the same reason Jesse's bro couldnt come early and "walk on" for a year

who cares. He said he'd walk on if he doesn't get a scholly. So don't give him one and if he's any good, he'll make the team and we didn't use up a scholarship.
